Chen Liping warmly welcomed Charlie Wade’s family into her home. The living room was filled with the delicious smell of food.
The villa was decorated very elegantly, showing that a lot of care had been put into it. It was even nicer than Tomson’s first-class villa.
Photos of adults and children decorated the walls, each one radiating warmth and happiness.
Ma Lan looked around, impressed by Sister Chen’s talent. She quickly introduced Chen Liping to Xiao Churan and Charlie Wade, saying with a smile, “This is my runaway team. Our vice-captain, Chen Liping. You should call her Auntie Chen!”
Then she turned to Chen Liping and said, “Sister Chen, this is my daughter Xiao Churan and her husband Charlie Wade.”
Xiao Churan greeted Chen Liping politely, saying, “Hello, Aunt Chen. I’m sorry for intruding!”
Chen Liping smiled back and replied, “No worries! Even though I’ve only known your mother for a little while, I’ve really wanted you to visit our home. Your mom told me your husband was busy in Hong Kong, so I thought I’d wait until he came back to invite you. But now that your mom is heading back to China soon, I feel a bit sad.”
Ma Lan sighed and said, “To be honest, I planned to stay in the U.S. until I could go back to China with my daughter and son-in-law. But I got so homesick that I just had to go back early.”
Chen Liping nodded and said seriously, “I understand. When I first came to the U.S., I felt the same way. It was exciting at first, but then…”
Ma Lan smiled as she thought about her daily trips back to China. “If it weren’t for my son, daughter-in-law, and grandson, I would have gone back already,” she said.
Ma Lan didn’t feel a strong connection to her hometown. To her, home was wherever she felt comfortable. In China, she struggled to make ends meet. But when she moved to the United States and stayed in a hotel with her daughter and son-in-law, she began to see that hotel as her home. Now, she held a necklace called the Goddess’ Dream in her hand.
Later, Ma Lan took out a gift she had bought earlier that day. She handed it to Chen Liping with a smile. “Sister Chen, this is my first time visiting your home. I wasn’t sure what you liked, so I bought you a set of tableware. I hope you like it.”
Chen Liping quickly replied, “You didn’t have to buy anything. You come here as if it’s your own home!”
Ma Lan was used to this kind of politeness in Chinese culture and chuckled, “Oh, it’s not a lot of money, just a small gesture.”
Chen Liping smiled back, saying, “Don’t spend so much next time. I really appreciate it.”
Just then, a woman around thirty years old approached them with a big smile. “You must be Aunt Ma! My mom has been telling me about you. She said I could chat with you!”
Chen Liping quickly introduced them, saying, “Ma Lan, this is my daughter-in-law, Sun Huina. You can just call her Huina.”
Then she turned to Huina and said, “Huina, this is Aunt Ma, and these are Aunt Ma’s daughter and son-in-law.”
Sun Huina greeted Xiao Churan and Charlie Wade warmly. “Please, sit down for a bit. My father-in-law and husband are…”
In the kitchen, the food was cooking, but Chen Liping said, “We can eat later.”
She smiled and quickly added, “Come on, let’s sit on the sofa for a while. They’ll call us when it’s time to eat.”
Ma Lan grinned and asked, “By the way, Sister Chen, don’t you have a pair of grandchildren? Where are they?”
Chen Liping replied casually, “The kids went to Disney with their uncle’s family. They won’t be back until the day after tomorrow.”
Ma Lan looked surprised and asked, “Do you have relatives in the United States?”
“Yes,” Chen Liping nodded. “Their uncle’s family lives in Los Angeles, and my husband has a cousin in California. We visit each other often.”
Chen Liping continued, “Actually, we don’t stay in Providence all the time. Last year, my son’s business brought us here from Chicago, but we might have to move to New York soon.”
