Ma Lan looked at the policewoman, surprise on her face. “It’s me, what’s wrong?” she asked.
The policewoman replied, “I need to check your information. You are Ma Lan from Jinling, China. You’re on Cathay Pacific flight CX845 from New York to Hong Kong Island, right?”
“Yes…” Ma Lan said, feeling more confused. “Is there a problem with my flight?”
The policewoman replied coldly, “The flight is fine, but there’s an issue with your luggage. Please come with us to help with the investigation.”
Ma Lan was alarmed. “What could be wrong with my luggage? I only have my personal clothes and some local specialties from New York. I didn’t pack anything like lithium batteries…”
The policewoman interrupted, “Don’t argue. There are other passengers here. To avoid affecting their flight, please come with me.”
As she spoke, she pulled out a pair of handcuffs. “Listen carefully: you have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can be used against you in court. You also have the right to have a lawyer. If you can’t afford one, we’ll provide one for you. Do you understand these rights?”
Panic set in for Ma Lan. “What are you doing? I am a first-class passenger! Who gave you the right to arrest me? What law have I broken?!”
The policewoman responded coldly, “Ma Lan, as a Chinese citizen, let me remind you that this is the United States. Don’t resist, or you will regret it!”
“Don’t mess with me!” Ma Lan shouted, sitting up straight. “I can walk just fine! You think I’m scared of the police? What about the United Nations? I’m no ordinary old lady!”
The policewoman was losing her patience. She took out her handcuffs and said firmly, “Ma Lan! I need you to turn around and put your hands behind your back. Don’t resist or run away, or my colleagues might have to use their equipment on you, including tasers. It’s best if you cooperate!”
Realizing many people were watching, Ma Lan felt embarrassed as a first-class passenger.
Her anger flared up. She placed her hands on her hips and yelled, “Listen, don’t waste my time! I paid a lot for this first-class ticket, not to be treated like this by the police! I’m about to board my flight back to China, so step aside and don’t ruin my trip!”
Seeing Ma Lan’s stubbornness, the policewoman shook her head in frustration. She turned to the two male officers beside her and said, “Take her away!”
The two policemen had been observing Ma Lan for a while. Even though they didn’t understand her words, they could tell she was acting very arrogantly, and they were prepared to intervene.
Now that the policewoman had decided to stop trying to reason with her, the two officers moved quickly. One of them grabbed Ma Lan while the other picked her up and threw her onto the soft carpet of the first-class lounge.
Another officer rushed in, grabbed Ma Lan by the hair, and pulled her back.
Ma Lan screamed in pain as someone pressed down on his back with their knee, forcing him to the ground. Another officer quickly grabbed Ma Lan’s hands, pulled them behind his back, and tightly handcuffed him.
In agony, Ma Lan shouted, “The police are killing me! Someone, help!”
The white policeman holding him down snapped back angrily, “Hey! Shut up!”
Ma Lan, who had gone to college, recognized the insult and felt his anger rise. Gritting his teeth, he shot back, “You want me to be quiet? I can hold it together, but you’re still messing with me?! Who do you think you are? Listen to me! How dare you talk to me like that! Keep your words clean, or else!”
