Charlie Wade nodded and then remembered something. He asked, “Mr. Fei, have compatriots harmed each other a lot in the United States in recent years?”
Fei Jianzhong smiled awkwardly and replied, “Yes, it happens quite a lot. This kind of thing has always been common in the United States…”
He continued, “Of course, it’s not just our Chinese compatriots who face this issue. People from all countries experience similar situations.”
After a brief pause, Fei Jianzhong explained, “As you know, the United States is a country of immigrants, making the population very diverse. There are many ethnic minorities, and these groups often face challenges due to being new arrivals and language barriers. This can lead to two extremes.”
He elaborated, “One extreme is that they become very close with their compatriots. They support each other and work together, which is how places like Chinatown and Koreatown were formed. Unfortunately, this also leads to the growth of gangs made up of ethnic minorities.”
“On the other extreme,” he continued, “are individuals who, wanting to succeed in the U.S., choose to harm others for their own gain. Because of language barriers and the unfamiliar environment, they often start by targeting their fellow compatriots, thinking they will be less cautious.”
Fei Jianzhong added, “These people typically have dishonest intentions. They might want to cheat Americans, but they can’t even speak proper English. So, they end up preying on their own community instead.”
Charlie Wade listened carefully as Fei Jianzhong spoke. Fei explained that when someone from a specific ethnic group dies under mysterious circumstances in the United States, there’s a good chance that the killer is also from that same group. This pattern is especially noticeable among people of color. In neighborhoods where people live in poverty, it’s not unusual for gunfire to disturb the night, and if it doesn’t happen, the residents often find it hard to sleep.
Charlie nodded slightly, agreeing with Fei’s analysis. He recognized that, like everywhere, there are both good and bad individuals in every community. While some, like Chen Liping, harm their own people, most individuals strive to support one another. For instance, Chen Zhaozhong, despite facing challenges in New York, works to help Chinese children who have lost their families.
With a serious look, Charlie said, “Most Chinese people overseas come together to support each other, yet there are still a few who choose to harm their own. Many have been deceived by these bad actors.”
Fei nodded in agreement. “By the way, Mr. Ye, I asked a lawyer to look into similar cases in the U.S. over the last few years. Most of the time, they couldn’t find the main culprit. Many involved were just unwitting participants and ended up facing charges. Those arrested included not only Chinese, but also Japanese, Koreans, and others. It suggests there is a larger criminal organization at work.”
Charlie then asked, “Have the American police made any progress in uncovering this?”
Who is the mastermind behind it?
