- The Amazing Son-in-Law [The Charismatic Charlie Wade] (Chinese name) Chapter: 4728
Ma Lan didn’t understand how to survive in American prisons.
In this place, if you are truly innocent, other prisoners will make your life miserable. But if you have a criminal past, especially if you are known to be tough, other inmates will keep their distance. They will either respect you or fear you.
Ma Lan thought that if she admitted to being a drug dealer, everyone would avoid her. In the U.S., drug dealers are seen as dangerous people, often linked to powerful gangs.
However, when she got nervous, she accidentally revealed the truth about herself. This was like sealing her fate in that cell.
When the red-haired woman heard what Ma Lan said, she didn’t hesitate to slap her face. But that wasn’t enough for her. She stepped closer, looked Ma Lan in the eyes, and said firmly, “Listen, if you want to have an easier time here, you need to be obedient. Make sure your family puts more money in your account. I need money to buy things, and if your family can help you out, life will be a bit better for you here.”
Then, the red-haired woman remembered something important. She grabbed Ma Lan’s collar and added, “Oh, and one more thing. The guard, Jessica Brownstone, who is in charge of this cell, sells cigarettes on the side. They’re expensive—forty dollars a pack for Spirit brand cigarettes. You can’t buy them with your prison account. Your family has to send cash to her first before she can get them for you.”
“Bring it in,” the red-haired woman said with a sneer.
Ma Lan replied nervously, “I… I don’t smoke…”
The woman slapped Ma Lan again, scolding, “Idiot! You don’t get to refuse me! Starting tomorrow, you need to ask Jessica Brownstone for one pack of American Spirit cigarettes every day. Make it three packs! My friends and I are running low on tobacco, so you better figure it out. Otherwise, I’ll make you regret it!”
With a sad look, Ma Lan said, “I just got locked up, and I haven’t been able to contact my family. How am I supposed to get you cigarettes?”
“I don’t care!” the woman shot back coldly. “If I don’t see those cigarettes by tomorrow night, I will make you pay!”
Then she added a warning, “Oh, and if you think about telling the guards, I’ll shove a sharpened toothbrush handle down your throat. Don’t believe me? Just wait and see!”
Ma Lan was so scared that she started to cry.
Just then, a young Chinese woman stepped forward and whispered, “Auntie, that red-haired woman is named Chloe. She’s been in this prison for five years, and everyone knows she’s a bully. Not just in our cell, but in many others too. You really shouldn’t provoke her; it could end badly.”
Seeing a fellow countrywoman, Ma Lan cried, “She’s being so unreasonable! Why is she picking on me? I haven’t done anything wrong!”
Chloe, annoyed by Ma Lan’s tears, grabbed her by the hair and slapped her again, saying coldly, “Stop crying!”
Ma Lan never expected the women’s prison in the United States to be so harsh. Just a few minutes after arriving, she was hit hard three times in a row. It hurt a lot.
