Chloe didn’t even get a chance to plead with Ma Lan for mercy before more than 30 people took turns slapping her face. By the end, Chloe felt dizzy and disoriented.
She lost count of how many times she passed out, only to be jolted awake by another harsh slap. Ma Lan stood nearby, watching like a supervisor, making sure every female prisoner hit Chloe as hard as they could.
Whenever someone slapped her too gently, Ma Lan would kick them and shout, “You fools! She has bullied you for so long, and now you finally have a chance to fight back! Don’t hold back! That last one doesn’t count, give her a real hit!”
Most of the women didn’t hesitate when it came to Chloe. They were just getting tired of the constant slapping, and a few were too weak to hit hard. But Ma Lan wasn’t going to let that slide.
With a mix of revenge against Chloe and fear of Ma Lan, the other prisoners became even more brutal. So many of them wanted to take a turn that Chloe began to show signs of a concussion.
Yet, Ma Lan still didn’t see the problem. Although it was only one day, she had already experienced Chloe’s cruelty and malice. In her heart, Ma Lan decided she wouldn’t hold back against this female monster. As long as they were in Bedford Hill Correctional Institution, she would make sure Chloe suffered rather than escaped unscathed.
After everyone had their turn slapping Chloe, Ma Lan approached Chloe, who now looked unrecognizable, and coldly said, “Chloe, you’ve been here for a while, and you still think nothing will happen to you?”
“What’s going on today?” Ma Lan sneered as she spoke. “In China, we have a saying: Don’t be so quick to enjoy your fun today. One day, people will come to hold you accountable for your actions, especially someone like you!”
Ma Lan noticed Chloe looking confused and pointed to a Chinese girl leaning against the wall. “Why are you just standing there? Translate for her!” she ordered.
The girl looked puzzled and asked, “Auntie… What do you mean by ‘green pill’? Is it really a green pill?”
Ma Lan snapped back, “No! I mean the crime settlement list! Do you think this is some kind of joke? You haven’t even seen ‘Little Soldier Zhang Ga’? How can you call yourself Chinese if you don’t know such a classic line?!”
The girl sighed and replied, “I… I am Chinese, but I was born and raised in the United States. I’m an American…”
Ma Lan was frustrated. “What were your parents thinking? Didn’t they teach you about your country?!”
The girl shook her head softly. “They are always busy making money and don’t pay much attention to me…”
Ma Lan huffed, “Listen, no matter where you go, you can’t forget your roots! Even if you are an American citizen, don’t forget that you have yellow skin and black hair!”
The girl nodded quickly. “Auntie, you’re right. I’ll remember this and try to learn more about Chinese culture…”
Ma Lan rolled her eyes but didn’t say anything else. She pointed at Chloe and urged, “Hurry up and translate!”
The girl didn’t want to delay any longer and quickly began translating Ma Lan’s words.
Chloe’s tears had stopped flowing. She sat on the ground, trembling and feeling broken, like a fragile glass about to shatter.
