Claire assumed Charlie was just joking, so she brushed it off and stepped aside to dial Miss Young’s number. Before long, the call connected.

Doris’ sweet and cheerful voice greeted her, “Hello, Miss Wilson.”

“Hi, Miss Young. I have a favor to ask,” Claire said, her voice a bit hesitant.

“Sure, what do you need?” Doris replied.

Taking a deep breath, Claire rehearsed her request in her mind before speaking with determination, “Could you let me know if the chairman is available tomorrow night? My family is hosting a banquet to formally announce our collaboration with Emgrand Group, and I would be honored if he could attend…”

After a moment of silence, Doris responded, “Miss Wilson, I’m sorry, but I can’t make decisions for the chairman. However, I can certainly ask him for you, if that’s alright?”

Claire replied politely, “Thank you, and I apologize for any inconvenience.” Once the call ended, she held her phone anxiously, waiting for a response. Just then, Charlie’s phone rang unexpectedly. Cursing himself for forgetting to mute it, he guessed it was Doris calling to get his opinion.

Attempting to appear calm, he answered, “Yes?”

As anticipated, Doris’ voice came through, “Mr. Wade, the Wilson Group is having a banquet tomorrow night. I’d like to know if you would like to attend.”

Charlie responded, “Oh, is that so? Sure, I will… alright, bye…”

Quickly hanging up, he muttered, “These marketing spam calls are really annoying…”

Unaware of anything amiss, Claire’s phone rang again.

Doris’ voice came through once more, “Hello, Miss Wilson. I’m pleased to inform you that our chairman has accepted your invitation and will be attending the banquet!”

“Really? That’s fantastic! Thank you so much for your assistance. Please extend my gratitude to Mr. Chairman as well…” Claire exclaimed, barely containing her excitement. She hadn’t expected the chairman to agree.

Turning to Lady Wilson, she exclaimed joyfully, “Grandma! The chairman of Emgrand Group is coming!”

“Really!?” Lady Wilson’s excitement was palpable!

She immediately instructed her family, “Quick, get everything ready! Book the most luxurious hotel and order the finest food and drinks! We need to put on a grand welcome for the chairman of Emgrand Group!”

“Also, reach out to all the major companies in the city and invite them to our banquet! Let them know that the chairman will be there!”

As the office buzzed with activity, everyone scrambled to make phone calls. The news spread like wildfire throughout Aurous Hill, with everyone learning about Wilson Group’s banquet and the mysterious chairman’s attendance.

Lady Wilson answered numerous inquiries with a beaming smile, delighted by the attention. She felt certain that after tomorrow’s event, the Wilson family would become the most sought-after family in Aurous Hill!

With a joyful laugh, she declared, “Alright, that’s enough for today. Let’s focus on preparing for tomorrow’s banquet. Dismissed!”

After the meeting, Lady Wilson returned to her office, and Harold, looking sheepish, followed closely behind.

“Grandma, are you really planning to appoint Claire as the director?” Harold couldn’t resist speaking up when they were alone.

Lady Wilson frowned and replied coldly, “I’ve made a promise to Claire. Why shouldn’t I appoint her?”

“Grandma, you can’t make her the director!”

“Why not? She secured a significant contract. Her contributions are noteworthy, and she deserves recognition.”

“She only got the Emgrand contract because Wendell from the Jones family assisted her. I heard he visited her yesterday, and then Emgrand Group signed with us today. It seems a bit too coincidental, don’t you think? I suspect she spent the night with Wendell!”

Lady Wilson’s expression darkened with brewing anger. “Is that true?”

“Absolutely!” Harold asserted confidently. “Wendell was definitely at Claire’s place last night. Just look into it, and you’ll see.”

“Grandma, Claire is a married woman. If word gets out about this contract and how it was won, what will people think of the Wilson family? What will they say about you?”

Lady Wilson’s frown deepened as she considered Harold’s claims. She recalled Wendell’s obvious feelings for Claire; after all, he had gifted her an expensive jade talisman for her birthday. It was becoming clearer why Claire had landed that lucrative contract.

Noticing her change in demeanor, Harold pressed on, “If you appoint a woman like Claire as director, our reputation will suffer! You should choose someone else for the role, preferably a man, to avoid any gossip!”

Lady Wilson nodded, contemplating his suggestion. She found herself believing much of what Harold said. It would be wise to select a different director to prevent any rumors about Claire’s alleged affair with Wendell. If people thought the new director was responsible for winning the project, it could shield the family’s reputation.

Moreover, she had her biases. She was not fond of Claire and had traditional views that clashed with Claire’s rising influence in the family. She resolved to keep Claire’s power in check.

Looking at Harold, she said coldly, “Harold, from now on, you must heed my instructions. Follow my guidance and avoid going against my wishes. Do you understand?”

Harold stood tall, pledging his loyalty, “Don’t worry, Grandma. I’ll follow your orders as a loyal servant. I’ll do whatever you say!”

“Good,” Lady Wilson replied, “At tomorrow’s banquet, I will announce that you will be the new director, fully responsible for the Emgrand Group project. But remember, you must remain obedient and loyal. I can elevate you, but I can also bring you down!”

With excitement, Harold exclaimed, “Don’t worry, Grandma! I’ll be on my best behavior!”
