Claire felt a reluctance to shake Peter’s hand, but with his offer extended, she knew it would be impolite to refuse. With a tight-lipped expression, she extended her hand hesitantly.
Just as Peter was about to grasp her delicate hand with excitement, a large hand unexpectedly intervened, gripping his firmly.
Peter froze, momentarily stunned. He looked up, his anger boiling over as he demanded, “What the hell!? Who are you?”
Claire also raised her gaze, a bit dazed by the sudden turn of events.
“Charlie! When did you get here?” she exclaimed.
Quickly, she turned back to Peter and clarified, “He is my husband.”
At the mention of ‘husband,’ Peter’s expression darkened, as if a storm cloud had settled above him.
“I just arrived,” Charlie said with a smile directed at Claire, then shifted his attention to Peter, feigning ignorance of the tension in the air. “You’re Peter Murray, right? The boss of Millenium Enterprise?”
Peter responded with a sullen tone, “Yes, that’s me. What’s it to you?”
“Nothing much. Just wanted to point out that you’re quite the lecherous, dirty old man!” Charlie replied, his tone dripping with mock sincerity.
Annoyed, Peter tried to pull his hand away, but Charlie’s grip felt unyielding, as if it were made of iron.
Peter hissed in pain as the pressure increased, feeling like his bones might snap. “Hey, let… let go of my hand! This really hurts!”
Claire, aware of Charlie’s strength, urged, “Charlie, please let go.”
Finally, Charlie released his hold, casting a knowing smile at Peter.
Peter’s face was twisted in discomfort as he glared at Charlie, then turned to Claire with irritation. “Tell your husband to leave. I’m not comfortable discussing business in front of outsiders.”
Claire hesitated for a moment before responding, “Charlie is my husband. He’s aware of my plans; he’s not an outsider.”
“Still! I prefer to keep significant discussions private,” Peter retorted, glaring at Charlie as if he wished him to vanish. “Besides, he wouldn’t understand what we’re talking about anyway.”
Claire leaned in and whispered to Charlie, “Why don’t you head home first? I’m here for official business.”
“It’s fine, I’ll wait,” Charlie replied, settling down beside Claire.
Peter’s frustration grew as he watched Charlie sit close to Claire, their arms brushing against each other. He felt exasperated, having almost secured Claire’s attention, only to be thwarted.
With a dismissive snort, he said, “You’re the live-in son-in-law of the Wilson family, aren’t you? You do know how infamous you are in Aurous Hill? Claire is working hard to support the family. We’re discussing a potential collaboration, so please don’t interfere and just leave.”
Peter’s tone was blunt and disrespectful, reflecting his disdain for Charlie, and he was eager to have him gone.
Many in their social circle were aware of the so-called deadbeat son-in-law of the Wilson family, and Peter lamented the fact that a woman like Claire was tied to someone he viewed as a leech.
