“Absolutely,” Lily replied. “They’ve been friends since their college days!”

As she spoke, her thoughts turned dark: ‘Charlie, you and Douglas are such good pals, yet you had the audacity to gift him a worthless piece of trash. Just wait until my dad reveals the truth and exposes you for the fraud you are!’

To everyone’s surprise, Lawson chimed in with a grateful sigh, “Indeed, it appears he is a true friend! Why else would someone give such a valuable gift?”

The room fell silent in disbelief!

What did he mean by ‘valuable’? Was he actually claiming that the yellowish drawing was worth something?

Frustrated, Clinton cursed silently, ‘Damn it! I could head over to Antique Street, buy a cheap imitation, and ruin it to make it look old and yellowish. It would still look more authentic than that piece of junk!’

Lawson cleared his throat and spoke earnestly, “This is an original work by Rachel Ruysch, a renowned painter from the Dutch Golden Age. Although she may not be widely recognized today, she was one of the most exceptional artists of her time and the first female member of the Confrerie Pictura.”

He glanced back at the painting and added, “I estimate its market value to be around two hundred thousand dollars.”

“What? Two hundred thousand dollars?” Lily gasped, her eyes widening in shock. The artwork she thought was worth less than a hundred dollars was actually so valuable!

Douglas was equally astonished. He turned to Charlie and stuttered, “Hey, Charlie, why would you give me something so pricey? I can’t accept this, it’s too much…”

With a smile, Charlie replied, “Doug, consider it my way of showing affection. Let’s not focus on the price.”

Douglas felt deeply touched and grateful, never expecting his college buddy to be so generous!

Meanwhile, Clinton’s face lost all color.

What was happening? That awful drawing was supposedly worth two hundred thousand dollars? This was outrageous!

The others in the room were just as shocked.

No one dared to underestimate Charlie any longer!

After all, he was the kind of person who would gift a painting valued at two hundred thousand dollars!

Everyone envied Douglas for receiving such an extravagant gift during the opening of his restaurant! He had truly struck gold!

In the meantime, Lily was also taken aback. Her opinion of Charlie shifted in an instant!

She knew her father’s appraisal skills well. If her father claimed the painting was worth two hundred thousand, it had to be accurate!

She couldn’t help but gaze at Charlie in awe, her eyes sparkling with admiration for his generosity!

Claire, looking puzzled, asked, “Charlie, how much did you actually pay for that painting?”

Charlie smiled and replied softly, “To be honest, it didn’t cost me much. An acquaintance sold it to me at a low price after acquiring it from a collector.”

Claire pursed her lips, skeptical. “Really? He was willing to sell a two hundred thousand dollar painting for just a few thousand? That sounds too good to be true.”

“Not everyone prioritizes money the same way. I’m one of those people. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have given such a meaningful gift to Douglas,” Charlie explained.

Claire nodded slightly, realizing he was right. He wouldn’t have given such a thoughtful present if he valued money over friendship. Perhaps her seemingly aimless husband was more charming than she had thought!

At that moment, Charlie stood up and looked at the flustered Clinton with a playful smile. “So, Mr. Clinton, how would you prefer the table to be set? Would you like to gnaw on it directly, or should I chop it into pieces for you?”
