An Understated Dominance - Chapter 247
Dustin thought that Dahlia must have had nothing better to do. He shook his head, washed up, and opened the door to the medical center like he did every day.
As the door creaked, a blood-soaked figure suddenly fell to the floor. It was a man dressed in white, completely covered in blood. He had a broken sword on his back and looked like he had been unconscious for a while.
Dustin rushed over to check on him and realized it was Maximus Kane! “I didn’t remember hurting him yesterday. Did I?” he wondered, rubbing his chin in confusion. Maximus was ranked sixth among The Hundred Immortals, a top fighter in tiny Swinton. How had he ended up in such bad shape?
“Consider yourself lucky,” Dustin mumbled as he helped lift Maximus into the medical center. He couldn’t ignore a dying man right at the entrance.
Maximus had many external wounds, but those were easy to treat with bandages. However, he had serious nerve damage and his core energy was affected too. Whoever attacked him wanted to seriously hurt him. Luckily, his years of martial arts training had given him a strong foundation, preventing him from being completely crippled. With Dustin’s medical skills, he felt confident he could heal Maximus in a few weeks.
First, Dustin gave Maximus an injection and then some medicine. About thirty minutes later, Maximus finally opened his eyes.
“Hey, you’re awake! How do you feel?” Dustin asked casually.
“Did you save me?” Maximus replied, surprised. Last night, he had suffered severe injuries.
injured and found a medical center on the street. Just as he was about to knock on the door, he blacked out at the entrance.
“Who else? Do you see anyone around?” Dustin asked, a bit taken aback by the silly question.
“Thank you,” Maximus said, struggling to sit up and bow.
Dustin gently pushed him back onto the bed. “That’s enough. Stop moving around when you’re badly hurt.”
“Even on the edge of death, he’s worried about manners. What’s wrong with this guy?” Dustin thought.
“You’re good at martial arts. So, how did you end up like this?” Dustin asked. Maximus clenched his teeth, trying to find the words. “It’s fine. Don’t tell me if you don’t want to. I’m not that curious,” Dustin added, waving him off as he turned to leave.
“Wait…” Maximus took a deep breath. “You were right yesterday. I made three big mistakes in my Illusory Sword Technique.”
“Oh, really? Did you face a tough opponent that quickly?” Dustin was surprised to hear his casual comment had turned out to be true.
“It wasn’t just any opponent. It was my mentor, Luther Williams!” Maximus said, his face dark with anger.
“Your mentor?” Dustin was shocked. “Why would he hurt you?”
“Because… I caught him cheating with my female mentee!” Maximus replied, filled with resentment. “After I lost, I went home to ask Luther about my mistakes, but I found him in bed with my young mentee!”
“I kicked the door open in a rage and confronted him loudly.”
Maximus felt humiliated and angry. He had to fight Luther, his mentor, who slashed at him with a sword. Maximus thought that with his sword skills, he could defend himself, even if he couldn’t win.
As they fought, Maximus realized how naive he had been. It wasn’t just practice he needed; it was understanding his weaknesses. Luther easily took advantage of Maximus’s flaws during their battle, especially with the third, ninth, and twenty-sixth moves. In that moment, Maximus understood that Luther, whom he had admired, had set him up from the start. He felt like nothing more than a tool to Luther, who never truly cared for him. Whenever Maximus was upset, Luther used his mistakes against him to save himself.
Tears filled Maximus’s eyes. He had always seen Luther as a father figure, and it hurt to think that the kind old man was just a hypocrite.
Dustin shook his head, feeling sorry for Maximus. “What can I say? You have a scoundrel of a mentor,” he replied. Sadly, Maximus’s experience was not unusual in the martial arts world. There were many stories of mentors and their disciples turning against each other. People could be deceitful.
Maximus continued, “I wouldn’t mind being used. I would have taken on a dangerous mission if he asked. But why did he have to hurt my female mentee? She’s my fiancée!” In a fit of rage, he slammed his fist into the wall, creating a hole.
Dustin was shocked by the confession. He opened his mouth to respond, but no words came out.
