An Understated Dominance - Chapter 270
Florence, Jane, and Dakota were thrilled to see the doctor. They knew he must be impressive based on how James talked about him. Jane and Dakota felt they deserved the best care, and Dr. Fenton Reyes was just that.
“James, how did you get Dr. Reyes to come here? He’s a legend in Stonia!” Florence asked, her curiosity piqued. James smiled and said, “It wasn’t me. Mr. Langford arranged for Dr. Reyes to come see Aunt Jane.”
“Mr. Langford?” Florence’s eyes lit up at the mention of his name.
Luis Langford was a wealthy and influential aristocrat from Stonia. He had strong connections in the military and government. More importantly, the Langford family was close friends with the Nicholson family from Glenstead, Morcover. The Nicholsons were interested in an arranged marriage between Luis and Dahlia. If Dahlia agreed, she could quickly marry into the wealthy Langford family, lifting her entire family’s status!
“That’s so kind of Mr. Langford! He asked for a skilled doctor as soon as he heard about my mom’s illness. That’s how we have Dr. Reyes here!” Dakota said as he led the doctor to Jane’s bed.
“Where are you hurting?” Dr. Reyes asked gently.
“I have a headache! It feels like my head is splitting in half!” Jane replied, scrunching her face in pain. She looked weak and worn out.
“I’ll take a look,” Dr. Reyes said as he carefully placed his stethoscope on her. After a moment, he said, “There doesn’t seem to be any serious issue. You’re likely just sleep-deprived and stressed.” He then took out a bottle of medicine and poured three white pills. “Take one pill a day for three days, and you’ll feel better.”
“Awesome! Thank you, Dr. Reyes!” Jane exclaimed, her spirits lifting. Florence saw this as a chance to impress the doctor. “You really are the legendary Dr. Reyes! You managed to cure an…”
illness that has left many doctors confused!
“Hmph! That Rhys guy was just trying to scare us when he said my mom would cough up blood! He’s full of nonsense. A fake like him needs to be dealt with!” Dakota said angrily.
“Exactly! Once I’m better, I’ll take care of him!” Jane said as she swallowed a pill. But instead of feeling better, her headache grew worse, and she was soon sweating coldly from the pain.
Just as she was about to ask the doctor what was going on, she started coughing violently. Her face turned red from the effort.
“Mom! What’s happening? Are you okay?” Dakota asked, worry filling his voice. Suddenly, Jane coughed up a mouthful of blood that splattered across her face.
“What just happened?”
Everyone in the room was shocked by how quickly Jane’s condition had worsened. They exchanged worried glances with one another.
Panicking, Dakota called out for the doctor. “Dr. Reyes, what’s wrong? Why did she cough up blood?”
“That’s strange. I’ll check again,” Dr. Reyes said, looking concerned. He examined Jane closely, but soon his expression turned serious. “I’m sorry to say this, but your mother has a terminal illness. She’s in the late stage. I’m afraid she doesn’t have much time left.”
“What? A terminal illness?” The room fell silent as everyone processed the shocking news. Hadn’t Dr. Reyes just said Jane would be fine? Why had his diagnosis changed so suddenly?
“I’m sorry, but I can’t help any further. I need to go,” the old doctor said, lowering his head in shame. He stood up and left while the others stared at him, panic rising in their hearts.
“First headaches, then coughing up blood, and now this? Was that guy right?” Jane whispered to herself, feeling overwhelmed.
“Quick! Get Dustin Rhys back here! Now!” someone shouted.
