Chapter 3453
-“Mr. Fraser,” Holden greeted with a strained smile, feeling deeply depressed. As Clarissa’s husband, he held no status in front of her assistants and had to maintain a friendly demeanor when interacting with them.
“We came to see Kathryn. How is she? We were worried about her all night. We just learned you sent her to the hospital, so we rushed over,” Holden said, fabricating the story.
In truth, after Clarissa had yelled at Holden and his sons the previous night, they left the Farrell family mansion quickly. They kept watch over the mansion but saw no activity throughout the night, except for Mr. Dunn’s visits.
Holden wondered if he had miscalculated or if Clarissa was laying a trap for her niece.
Pedro replied calmly, “Miss is awake and not seriously ill. Mr. Janzen, you appear to be more injured than she is.”
Holden offered an awkward smile. “I had a disagreement with my wife. Seeing Kathryn like that made me anxious. After all, I am her biological father. Watching my daughter lying motionless filled me with anger, leading to a fight with my wife. I can’t compete with her.”
Feeling embarrassed, Holden lifted the insulated lunch box in his hand. “It’s early, and you probably haven’t had breakfast yet. I made dumplings for Kathryn and brought them along. She loves dumplings filled with chives.”
Kathryn enjoyed the aroma of leeks and favored dumplings stuffed with leeks, pork, and corn.
Holden’s sons also brought items: some brought fruits, others brought nutritional supplements, along with more insulated lunch boxes. They even prepared breakfast for Pedro.
Pedro gestured for Holden and his sons to set their items on the coffee table. “Miss is in the bathroom. Please have a seat. Would you like some water?”
Pedro attended to his guests like a gracious host, making Holden and his sons feel welcomed.
The sons felt uncomfortable but didn’t dare to confront him.
“Thank you, but we’re not thirsty. We just came to see Kathryn. If she’s okay, we can return to work without any worries,” Marco said casually.
Marco declined the offer of water, and Pedro did not press the issue. Left with nothing to say, they waited in awkward silence for Kathryn to finish in the bathroom.
When Kathryn finally emerged, Holden stood up, looking worried. “Kathryn.”
“Dad, why are you here?” Kathryn asked, having overheard their conversation while in the bathroom. She knew they had come to check if she was still alive. She feigned ignorance about the situation, walked over, and sat on the lone sofa. Pedro stood beside her, acting as her protective guardian.
Filled with self-reproach, Holden said, “We came to see you. How are you? We were scared when we saw you motionless last night. Look at me; the wounds on my face and arms are from your mom. I thought she had hurt you and wanted to confront her, but I felt powerless. I couldn’t express your anger and ended up getting beaten instead.”
