Tatum replied softly, “Alright, as long as the young lady doesn’t mind my poor table manners, I will respectfully follow your request.”
“You appear to be a cultured and well-mannered person, and you look as gentle as jade. Although I haven’t shared a meal with you, I assume you don’t look bad while eating,” Elora remarked.
Tatum smiled.
He thought to himself: Miss, you truly deserve to be my wife; your perception is remarkable and spot on!
Elora responded, “…Who is your wife?”
“By the way, there’s something I would like to know in advance,” she continued.
Tatum gazed at her warmly, anticipating her questions.
Elora inquired, “Are you going back to your hometown to celebrate the New Year? It’s quite a distance from here to Wiltspoon. I’ve heard that winters in Wiltspoon aren’t very cold at all.”
Tatum answered, “I will return home for the New Year. Do you have a place for your meals, Miss? If so, I’d still like to go back. My grandmother is aging and eagerly awaits the New Year and other holidays, as it brings all of us cousins together. Typically, we all go our separate ways to earn a living, so it’s challenging for us brothers to reunite.”
Tatum spoke truthfully in this regard.
Elora, who had looked into Tatum’s background, was aware that he had two brothers and several cousins, totaling nine male relatives. Unlike her own family, they had no sisters.

Elora asked again, “How many brothers and sisters do you have?”
“In my generation, there are a total of nine brothers, and I am the sixth. My brothers all call me Tatum. I have no sisters; my family hasn’t had any daughters for several generations. Those who do have daughters often cannot raise them. My grandmother always said she gave birth to three sons, and those sons gave her nine grandsons. No daughter-in-law has ever given her a granddaughter. She has been waiting for one until her hair turned gray, but she still hasn’t received one. Now she is hoping for a great-granddaughter.”

Elora said, “Having too many grandsons can worry grandmothers. My grandparents were like that. They eagerly anticipated grandchildren, but their daughters-in-law only had one or two granddaughters while I have six or seven cousins. Both my parents passed away after giving birth to a son, and I didn’t expect to have a younger brother, as my mother had him at an advanced age.”
After a brief silence, Elora continued, “It’s not that our family treats daughters poorly; the elders still hope for a son, believing the family business should be inherited by a male heir. If they truly cannot have a son, they will consider allowing their daughter to take over. That’s how older ones like me end up managing the family.”
If Elora had an older or younger brother who was only one or two years her junior, she would certainly not be in the president’s position. Unless her brothers were inept, the elders would allow their son to take over and assign their daughter a supportive role. Tatum was rendered speechless. Elora continued, “In my family, the elders still prefer boys over girls. My brother is only a few years younger than me, and it will be more than a decade before he is old enough to take over.
