Chapter 3561
Recognizing Pedro’s concern for Kathryn, Clarissa reassured him, “Don’t worry, this medicine won’t harm her. It will simply make her sleep for a few days. Even when she wakes up, she’ll be weak for a week or two. I would never harm my only daughter.”

Pedro took the packet of powder, tucked it into his pocket, and said to Clarissa, “Madam, I’ve accepted the medicine, but I can’t guarantee that the young lady will take it.”
Clarissa had already determined that if Pedro didn’t carry out the task, she would find someone else to drug Kathryn. However, Pedro intended to test the medicine first to understand its effects, so Kathryn could be more cautious.
“I understand you don’t wish to harm her, madam,” Pedro continued, “but Kathryn is an adult with her own thoughts. If I go through with this, she’ll be furious with me.”
After a moment of silence, Clarissa responded, “It doesn’t matter how she feels. I just want to get her out of here.”
“Pedro, for Kathryn’s sake, we must align our intentions this time. We’re doing this for her benefit.”
Pedro wanted to argue—was this truly for Kathryn’s benefit? Did she even want this? But he held back his thoughts.
Clarissa added, “Don’t mention the medicine to Kathryn.”
Pedro replied, “I’m someone she trusts. I can’t keep secrets from her.”
Clarissa responded firmly, “Sometimes it’s necessary to keep things from her. There are lies, and then there are lies told for the right reasons. It’s acceptable to tell a good lie occasionally. Even if Kathryn gets upset with you, it won’t last. She’s intelligent and will comprehend my intentions as her mother.”
Pedro cautioned, “If you’re correct, she’ll only be angry for a brief period. But if something goes wrong, this could lead to serious consequences…”
“Between us for the rest of our lives.”
Clarissa hesitated. Regardless of the circumstances, she and Kathryn were still mother and daughter. Although Kathryn may not have strong feelings for her, there was an inherent bond between them. Blood ties foster a natural closeness.
Since Kathryn reentered her life, Clarissa’s love for her had evolved beyond mere biological connection.
“Madam, if there’s nothing else, I should leave now. You should go home and rest after work. The young lady is genuinely concerned about your health. Please take care of yourself.”
Clarissa laughed bitterly. “Does she really care about me? If she did, she wouldn’t have betrayed me. Had she not, I might have resolved the significant problem weighing on my mind.”
Pedro paused for a moment before asking, “Can you be sure your plan will succeed? The young lady is acting out of duty and respect for you. She is trying to make amends for your mistakes.”
Clarissa struggled to find a response. Her daughter’s actions were commendable, even if they contradicted her wishes. In Pedro’s view, Kathryn’s behavior was a form of atonement, which made her a good daughter.
Finally, Clarissa said, “You should go. Remember what I told you—I’m entrusting you with my only daughter. No matter what happens, you must protect Kathryn and ensure she doesn’t suffer.”
Pedro responded, “I’ll protect the young lady with my life if necessary.”
