Unlike her ambitious sister Elora, Rosie was carefree and easygoing. She sought out fun and didn’t take life too seriously, finding contentment in a simple existence without the pressure to compete. For Rosie, this approach to life was genuinely fulfilling.
After speaking with Rosie, Elora entered the dining room, where her two younger brothers and their mother were already seated at the table, each enjoying a bowl of soup. A bowl was also set at Elora’s usual spot, prepared by Tatum. After greeting Elora earlier, he had gone back to the kitchen to finish cooking two additional dishes before he could join them.
Elora planned to take a short break after lunch before returning to the office.
Although Tatum felt a bit tired, he was committed to caring for Elora, his fiancée, and waited for her to finish work before allowing himself to rest. If Elora did not come home for dinner that evening, Tatum would either take a break or continue working. While the Ormond family had other chefs, Tatum primarily cooked for Elora. He would prepare meals for the rest of the family when he felt inclined, and they never complained.
Tatum viewed the Ormonds as his future in-laws, so he was always pleased to create special meals for them, particularly for his future mother-in-law, Mrs. Ormond, and his brother-in-law, Alonzo. Although Elora was serious, her affection for her brothers was heartfelt.
“Sister, you must try the soup! Brother Tatum’s soup is amazing,” Alonzo exclaimed. “I’m planning to have another bowl later!”
Elora replied, “We’ll be eating soon. If you drink too much soup, you won’t have room for the other dishes. Didn’t you say you missed Brother Tatum’s cooking? He can also prepare you some more.”
After practicing the piano this afternoon, you can have some snacks before working on your drawing. I also bought some math problems for both of you, which need to be completed by tomorrow. After breakfast, I’ll check if you’ve finished your homework and review your paintings.”
The brothers’ expressions fell as they lost interest in the soup. Alonzo looked at his mother, hoping she would intervene and spare them from the homework. He wanted to play in the snow with Angelo instead.
Mrs. Ormond noticed Alonzo’s unspoken plea, but after glancing at Elora, she feigned ignorance and continued to enjoy her soup. When Elora took charge of Alonzo’s studies, even their parents felt they couldn’t interfere. Although they sympathized with him, they would either sit quietly or leave the room to avoid witnessing it. If they didn’t see it, they wouldn’t feel as guilty.
As Elora often reminded them, Alonzo and Angelo would eventually have to take over the family business. Without diligent effort, they wouldn’t be prepared for success. The Ormond family had experienced many ups and downs, and the two brothers needed to excel to safeguard the vast empire left by their ancestors.
Realizing that his mother wouldn’t step in, Alonzo understood that his silent plea had failed. He had grown accustomed to this, yet he couldn’t help but hold onto hope each time, only to be let down.
“Sister, I understand,” Angelo said obediently. Seeing Angelo acquiesce, Alonzo quickly followed suit, giving him a light kick under the table. The brothers never worked as a team but always managed to succeed. The Ormond family had faced many challenges, and the two brothers needed to be exceptional to protect the large empire inherited from their forebears.
ancestors.
Realizing that his mother wouldn’t intervene, Alonzo understood that his silent plea had gone unanswered. He was accustomed to this disappointment, yet he couldn’t help but cling to hope each time, only to be let down.
“Sister, I understand,” Angelo said, complying.
Upon seeing Angelo relent, Alonzo quickly followed suit, though he gave his brother a playful kick under the table.
The brothers never collaborated effectively and consistently yielded to Elora’s commands with little resistance.
