Angelo felt upset when Alonzo kicked him under the table but chose not to say anything; his expression, however, revealed his frustration. He wanted to focus on studying, but Elora was much stricter than their teachers, and even the family elders dared not challenge her, so neither did they.
Alonzo, feeling both sad and frustrated, turned to food for comfort. He ate a lot during lunch, and only when Elora expressed concern that he was overeating did she make him stop—he really might have overindulged. He secretly hoped that being too full would exempt him from doing his homework.
After lunch, Elora addressed Tatum, saying, “Tatum, after your break, could you prepare some snacks for Alonzo and the others? Also, please save some for Tinsley; she loves your snacks the most. I won’t be back for dinner tonight, so feel free to plan your evening as you wish.”
She added, “By the way, regarding the New Year holiday—would you mind working during that time? I can offer you five times your usual salary, along with holiday gifts and red envelopes.”
Elora understood that New Year was her most relaxing time, and she didn’t want to worry about meals. She hoped Tatum would agree to work through the holiday, but she was prepared to compensate him generously for it.

Tatum softly replied, “My grandmother is quite elderly, and she looks forward to having the family together for New Year. It’s very important to her.”

“Brother Tatum, if you’re going home for New Year, can I come with you?” Angelo asked. “I heard from Alonzo that it’s warmer there, and I don’t want to be cold during the holidays!”

“And me! I want to go too!” Alonzo chimed in.

Mrs. Ormond nearly asked to join them but hesitated and held back. Instead, she quickly thought of another idea and suggested to Elora, “Elora, we haven’t traveled as a family in a long time, and I’ve never been to Wiltspoon. How about we go there for a New Year trip? I’ve heard the food is excellent, and it’s about ten degrees warmer than here. That would be so comfortable for us.”

Tatum smiled and offered, “If you and Miss Elora visit Wiltspoon, I’d be happy to be your tour guide. I can take care of your meals, lodging, and transportation. I also know several restaurants there—you should come and try my Wiltspoon specialties.”

However, if Elora went to Wiltspoon, it might reveal Tatum’s true identity. He hadn’t tried to hide it, but he hadn’t been completely open about it either.
