Chapter 3749
Camryn smiled and said, “You spoil me too much. If you keep this up, I might become lazy. Relying on you for everything will wear you out.” Callum responded, “I won’t tire of taking care of you; I enjoy it.” He offered her more snacks, but she insisted on feeding herself. He handed her the snacks instead.
“Trenton may be young, but he’s strong. When our parents went to prison, it was tough for him at first, but he eventually accepted it. As long as he maintains the right mindset, he will adapt over time, no matter how challenging things become. He won’t hold a grudge,” Camryn explained.
She pushed the snack box toward Callum, encouraging him to eat as well.
“If Trenton didn’t have a positive outlook, I wouldn’t have cared for him the way I have. Despite everything I endured under his parents’ care, I couldn’t bring myself to hate him. He has always respected me as his older sister and kept a positive attitude. That’s why I’ve tried to shield him from their influence. He will one day lead the family and inherit a lot. He can’t grow up sheltered—he needs challenges to become strong enough to handle his responsibilities.”
In the past, Camryn had felt only a slight affection for Trenton. Her feelings toward her uncle, mother, and sister were quite different; she harbored deep resentment for all the pain they caused her. Even now, she was still healing from the wounds her mother inflicted.
What had she done to deserve such treatment? Why did her mother bring her into the world only to mistreat her?
Camryn couldn’t believe her mother had wanted to abort her but never got the chance. Instead, her mother gave birth to her and then blamed her for…
Everything. She even questioned whether her family had killed her father after everything that had transpired. People often say that children are a reflection of their mother’s heart, and most mothers love their children. However, Camryn’s mother was different. If she truly knew how to love, she wouldn’t have spoiled Carrie to such an extent, ultimately leading to Carrie’s downfall.
To be honest, if Carrie hadn’t caused trouble and angered Zachary, and if all that followed hadn’t occurred, Camryn might have needed years to reclaim her life and send her mother and uncle to prison.
Callum spoke up, “Your brother, your choice. I won’t stand in your way. If you need help, just let me know. I like Trenton—he’s a good brother-in-law. He’s smart, sensible, and doesn’t interfere. He’s even bold enough to threaten me! He said if I don’t treat you well, he’s not afraid of me being the York family’s second young master—he’ll fight me to ensure you’re never hurt.”
Callum accepted Trenton because of how much he cared for Camryn. Trenton had always viewed Camryn as his older sister.
Callum continued, “You’re thinking about your mother again, aren’t you? Don’t let it trouble you. Some people simply aren’t meant to be mothers. She’s biased, and nothing you do will change that. She’s selfish and weak, and she took all her frustrations out on you. Look how she spoiled Carrie, yet where did that lead Carrie? Your mother doesn’t deserve to be called a mother.”
Trenton had been sent to boarding school at a young age, spending most of his time away. He had always been independent and didn’t follow his parents’ lead. He believed in respecting his older sister, and he always did.
