Chapter 3890
After Liberty received a call from her former mother-in-law, she decided to consult Sonny once he woke up. When she explained the situation to him, Sonny was eager to stay with his grandparents at the Brown house for a couple of days.
“I’ll take you over there tomorrow,” Liberty said gently, smiling at her son.
She added, “If you’d prefer to stay just one night, that’s fine too. I’ll pick you up tomorrow and take you to your dad’s house for lunch.”
Later, Liberty planned to call Hank to inform him that Sonny wouldn’t arrive early in the morning, thus sparing the Brown family the trouble of waiting unnecessarily.
Sonny was thrilled and bounded toward his grandmother Audrey, announcing excitedly, “Grandma, Mom said I can stay! I’m going to sleep at your house tonight and play with my little brother!”
As soon as he finished speaking, Sonny dashed upstairs, brimming with energy. He adored his baby cousin, who had become increasingly animated. Whenever Sonny spoke to him, the baby’s cheerful babbling brought fits of laughter to everyone.
“Aunt Audrey, thank you for taking care of Sonny tonight,” Liberty expressed gratefully.
Audrey waved her hand, her eyes twinkling knowingly. “It’s no trouble at all. In fact, this house feels livelier with Sonny around, and your Uncle Darrell enjoys having him here too. Besides,” she added with a teasing smile, “tonight is your wedding night, Liberty. You and Duncan deserve some time alone.”
Liberty blushed slightly, aware of her aunt’s well-intentioned ploy. With Sonny at home, their night would have been anything but private. When he was this excited, he often refused to sleep, requiring her full attention to settle him down.
With her son staying at Audrey’s,
During their stay at Audrey’s, Liberty and Duncan were able to enjoy their first evening as a married couple without interruptions or worries about a little “light bulb” unexpectedly illuminating the room. Audrey laughed gently, saying, “Enjoy your time together, Liberty. Trust me, I’ve been there—these moments are important. Now, go home and make the most of it.”
After making sure Sonny was comfortable, Audrey turned her attention to Serenity and Zachary, encouraging them to head home as well. Serenity, who appeared somewhat weary—likely due to her pregnancy—gratefully accepted the suggestion. “Aunt Audrey, we’ll head out now,” she said with a warm smile, leaning slightly on Zachary as they left.
Liberty and Duncan followed closely behind, their fingers intertwined as they said their goodbyes. Audrey and Darrell stood in the doorway, waving as the two couples drove off into the night, their taillights gradually disappearing into the distance.
Turning to his wife, Darrell wore a satisfied smile. “Well, now you can finally relax. Both of our nieces have married into good families. No more sleepless nights worrying about them. Let’s focus on enjoying our golden years with the grandchildren.”
However, Audrey wasn’t ready to let go of her concerns completely. “Not yet. Don’t forget about Leland. That stubborn boy hasn’t celebrated New Year’s with us in years. He’s still single and living abroad. No matter how many blind dates we arrange, nothing seems to work out for him!”
Darrell sighed, feeling exasperated. “Love isn’t something you can force, Audrey. All your nagging is probably why he ran halfway across the world.”
“I can’t help it,” Audrey replied defensively. “There used to be plenty of bachelors his age, but now even those eligible ones—like Julian and Duncan—are…”
Audrey spoke defensively, “I can’t help it. There used to be many bachelors his age, but now even the most eligible ones—like Julian and Duncan—are happily married. Meanwhile, Leland is still out there all alone. How can I not worry?”
Darrell chuckled, “You’re feeling envious, aren’t you? But even if you asked Old Mrs. York to set him up, do you really think she has the time? That woman has nine grandsons to manage, and most of them already have their matches lined up. She’s busy enough without adding Leland to her worries.”
Audrey crossed her arms and smiled wryly. “That’s true, but I can’t help but admire her talent for matchmaking. The women she chose for her grandsons are all exceptional and perfectly suited for them. I have to admit—I’m a bit jealous of her success.”
Darrell shook his head and laughed. “Well, let’s just be patient. Leland’s story isn’t finished yet. When he’s ready, he’ll find someone. Until then, we have plenty to enjoy with the family we have.”
