- The Amazing Son-in-Law [The Charismatic Charlie Wade] (Chinese name) Chapter: 4755
When someone helps you, it’s important to take care of them too. This is much better than being alone.
I remember when I traveled to Mexico by myself. I planned to go deep into a dangerous situation. I thought about pretending to be weak, like a pig, to lure in the danger, and I wanted to bring my friend Fei Kexin along. However, I knew that doing so would put her in a risky spot.
At first, Fei Kexin didn’t understand what I was planning. When she learned that I was going to take the place of a possible victim in a dangerous trap, she realized that if she came with me, she might only hold me back and wouldn’t be able to help. So, she decided it was best to stay behind.
When we arrived at the airport, I told Fei Kexin, “You have a special status, so it’s best if you don’t get out of the car.”
She quickly replied, “Mr. Ye, please be careful!”
I nodded, said goodbye, and got out of the car. I grabbed a small suitcase from the trunk and walked into the airport without looking back. This suitcase held some new clothes I had bought just the day before.
I wasn’t sure what awaited me in Mexico, but I needed to act as if I wasn’t prepared for danger, so I brought along some personal items.
After I checked in and got my boarding pass, I went through security by myself and arrived at the boarding gate early. Since I had bought an economy class ticket, I found a vacant seat at the gate and waited for my target to appear.
About ten minutes later, I spotted a middle-aged Asian man in his 40s rushing toward me. I recognized him immediately; he was Zhou.
Lang Hongjun, the son of Bihua, stood in line at the boarding gate. Like Charlie Wade, he had a 20-inch suitcase, but he also carried a heavy shoulder bag. At 40, Lang Hongjun appeared older than his age, with gray hair and many wrinkles on his face. It was clear that he was going through a tough time in his life.
As the boarding time approached, passengers grew restless and began to line up. Lang Hongjun joined the queue, dragging his suitcases behind him. Seeing this, Charlie Wade got up and followed him into line.
Charlie turned to Lang Hongjun and asked in Chinese, “Are you from China?”
“No,” Lang Hongjun replied, shaking his head. “I am Chinese-American and have been naturalized for many years.”
Charlie frowned slightly. It seemed Lang Hongjun was proud of his nationality, so he asked, “Did you move here for work?”
Lang Hongjun adjusted his shirt collar and said with pride, “I came as a student, but because of my great academic performance, I was given a chance to get a green card directly. So, I decided to stay in the United States.”
Charlie nodded, already familiar with Lang Hongjun’s background. He wanted to connect with him and learn more about his character through their conversation. He noticed that Lang Hongjun cared a lot about his nationality while also emphasizing his accomplishments as a student.
Charlie Wade felt a mix of pride and disgust as he thought about Lang Hongjun. He didn’t really like people like him.
There are many graduates from prestigious universities in China, and some even study abroad with government funding before deciding to stay overseas. It’s said that thousands of Tsinghua graduates have settled in Silicon Valley, USA.
While the choice to stay or return is personal, Lang Hongjun’s situation was different. He was a public student sponsored by his country, and he chose to remain in the United States. This decision didn’t sit well with Charlie, making it hard for him to feel positively about Lang Hongjun.
After a few exchanges, Charlie felt a sense of distaste for Lang Hongjun. However, he kept his emotions in check and decided to compliment him instead. “I’ve heard that public students are very impressive. You must be exceptional!”
Lang Hongjun beamed at the compliment, and his attitude toward Charlie became friendlier. “Back in my day, the standards for public students were very high. There were only a few spots available,” he replied with a smile.
Charlie nodded and asked curiously, “By the way, what are you doing in Mexico? Is it for business?”
Lang Hongjun hesitated for a moment, then replied awkwardly, “I… I’m going to work…”
