- The Amazing Son-in-Law [The Charismatic Charlie Wade] (Chinese name) Chapter: 4756
When it comes to work, Lang Hongjun looks a bit uneasy.
He used to feel proud of being a public student, but now he feels a bit embarrassed when talking about working in Mexico.
Charlie Wade notices Lang’s change in mood. He knows that Lang has switched jobs many times, and his earnings have been decreasing. After being unemployed for over a year, it’s clear to Charlie that Lang feels forced to go to Mexico.
With a light sigh, Charlie says, “I can see that you don’t want to go to Mexico to work. Honestly, I feel the same way. I wouldn’t go unless I had to.”
Lang Hongjun, curious, asks, “What are you planning to do in Mexico?”
Charlie shrugs, “I’m not sure yet. My visa in the United States is about to expire. I wanted to figure things out before it runs out, but the immigration bureau is cracking down on illegal immigrants. My uncle got deported recently, so I decided it’s best to leave the U.S. before my visa expires.”
Lang Hongjun seems puzzled and replies, “If things aren’t working out in the U.S., why not go back to China? The situation there is better than in Mexico.”
Charlie looks a bit embarrassed and admits, “To be honest, I left China because I couldn’t stay there anymore. I owe a lot of money, and if I go back, I might get arrested.”
Lang Hongjun smiles and teases, “So you borrowed money to escape?”
Charlie chuckles awkwardly and says, “Well, I borrowed a bit too much and didn’t manage it well…”
Lang Hongjun looked troubled as he said, “I have a big debt that I can’t pay back, so I need to keep a low profile for now.”
Charlie Wade, curious, asked, “Brother, since you were a top student, why did you end up in a place like Mexico? The opportunities in the United States are much better.”
Lang Hongjun’s expression turned sad. “I’m getting older. In the U.S., if you don’t achieve financial freedom by the time you’re 35 to 40, you’re likely to be pushed out by younger, more affordable workers. Even if you have experience, it doesn’t matter much. Young people earn a quarter or even a fifth of what we do, and they’re willing to put in the effort. One experienced person isn’t as good as two eager young ones. It’s like saying three cobblers can outsmart one Zhuge Liang.”
He sighed again and added, “In IT, new technologies keep coming out. Older employees like us struggle to keep up, and many end up getting left behind.”
Charlie nodded and pretended to be curious. “If you work in IT, wouldn’t moving to Mexico hold you back? Are you switching fields?”
Lang Hongjun waved his hand dismissively. “Oh, it’s nothing major. It’s just about finding a way to make a living.”
Noticing Lang Hongjun didn’t want to share more, Charlie decided to drop the subject. They were now boarding their flight, so they walked through the gate and headed towards the cabin.
Lang Hongjun picked a window seat, 39A, and stopped to place his suitcase and shoulder bag in the overhead compartment.
Charlie Wade squeezed into his seat and looked at his boarding pass. He pretended to check his seat number and murmured, “39B, where is this 39B…?”
As he spoke, he suddenly looked up and noticed Lang Hongjun sitting nearby. He feigned surprise and said, “Oh, brother, what a coincidence! My seat is next to you!”
“Really?” Lang Hongjun replied, looking surprised too.
They had been in line together to board the plane, one behind the other. Neither of them expected that their seats would end up being right next to each other.
