“That’s quite a coincidence,” Lang Hongjun said with a quick smile. “Come, sit down!”
Charlie Wade nodded, put away his suitcase, and sat next to Lang Hongjun. He smiled and said, “Looks like we’ll have someone to talk to on this trip.”
Lang Hongjun relaxed a bit and asked, “By the way, do you know anyone in Mexico?”
Charlie replied casually, “I have an acquaintance there. I’m just going to look around and see if there’s any business opportunity. If I find something, great; if not, I’ll head back.”
Lang Hongjun seemed curious. “Aren’t you worried about your creditors finding you when you return?”
Charlie waved his hand dismissively, “China is huge. There are plenty of places to hide. I’ll find somewhere to settle down first. Once I pay off my debts, maybe I can go home.”
Charlie then looked at Lang Hongjun and asked, “So, what are you doing in Mexico? Is there any way you could help me out?”
Lang Hongjun sighed and chuckled to himself. “If I had a good plan, I wouldn’t have left my wife and kids to come to Mexico.”
Lowering his voice, Lang Hongjun continued, “Let me tell you something. Mexico is a lawless place. Remember when the president spent all that money on building a wall at the border? It was to control illegal immigration and drug trafficking. Who really feels safe here?”
Charlie Wade nodded and asked with curiosity, “Brother, you talked for a long time, but you didn’t say what you were planning to do.”
Lang Hongjun decided to be honest. “To tell you the truth, I went to Mexico to become a seaman.”
“A seaman?” Charlie Wade asked, intrigued. “Are you working on a boat?”
“Yes,” Lang Hongjun replied, nodding. “A friend of my mother told me about this. They said the pay is good, and you can earn tens of thousands, even hundreds of thousands of dollars a year, though it is tough work.”
Charlie Wade frowned, wondering what Mei Yuzhen was really up to by convincing Lang Hongjun to become a seaman. He thought to himself that someone as cunning as Mei Yuzhen wouldn’t just trick Lang Hongjun without a deeper purpose.
Keeping his expression neutral, Charlie said, “Brother, you are a top student. Working at sea seems like a step down for you. Honestly, you might want to return to China and find a better opportunity. The development there is rapid; you would definitely find a good path.”
Lang Hongjun looked surprised and sighed. “I’ve thought about it, but it’s tough for me. My relatives, friends, and former classmates all know that I moved to the United States early on and brought my mother with me. They think we’re living a good life here. If I go back to China now, I can only imagine what they would say behind my back…”
Hearing this, Charlie smiled gently and replied, “Brother, just because I’m younger doesn’t mean…”
“It’s a big deal,” he said. “I can see it more clearly than you. The thing about family is that it includes your wife, children, parents, and everyone else. I don’t care about anything until it feels warm. You need to support your family now, so why should you worry? Can you save face by going to Mexico as a crew member?”
Lang Hongjun looked embarrassed as he replied, “To be honest, brother, I’ve felt guilty about my homeland for many years. Even though I’m an American citizen with an American passport, I always remember that my homeland supported me when I went abroad for my studies. I fell for outside temptations and let my homeland down. You said if I had succeeded like others, I could have been a big name, like a Fortune 500 entrepreneur or executive. Yes, I would have loved to return home with money and gifts, donate to my old school, and start a scholarship fund to help kids who can’t afford to study. That would be my way of making amends…”
As he spoke, Lang Hongjun’s eyes filled with tears. “But the truth is, I haven’t lived up to expectations! I can’t betray my homeland, and now that I can’t make it out here, should I go back and ask my homeland to take me in?”
