When Master Jingqing heard that Nanako was eager to try again, he didn’t hesitate to agree. He nodded and remarked, “If you wish to successfully enter the realm of the unconscious, the safest approach is to relinquish the seven emotions and six desires.”
Nanako paused momentarily, then softly questioned, “But if we cut off the seven emotions and six desires, what is the purpose of living?”
Master Jingqing replied without much thought, “It is only by letting go of the seven emotions and six desires that we can aspire to become a Buddha and better assist all sentient beings.”
Shaking her head, Nanako responded earnestly, “With all due respect, isn’t the pursuit of Buddha a form of the seven emotions and six desires in itself? Isn’t the deep concern for the welfare of all beings also a kind of desire? While the goal of saving all sentient beings is admirable, not everyone shares the same feelings about their own lives. If someone finds happiness and contentment in their current situation, why would they seek help from anyone else?”
Nanako continued, “Moreover, I have my own family and loved ones whom I cannot simply forget. Even if I could abandon them, my pursuit of enlightenment is another desire in itself. When I dive into the sea of consciousness, I do so with the intention of seeking enlightenment. If I try to convince myself—or the sea of consciousness—that I possess no desires, wouldn’t that be a form of self-deception?”
Master Jingqing was taken aback for a moment, then sighed softly, “What you say… does have merit…”
He then inquired, “What do you plan to attempt this time?”
Nanako shook her head, saying, “I’m not sure. I just want to try again, regardless of whether I succeed or fail. I won’t trouble you today, Master.”
Master Jingqing reassured her, “I have plenty of time, so you need not worry.”
Grateful, Nanako nodded and closed her eyes, once again engaging in introspection to allow her spiritual consciousness to enter the sea of consciousness.
As before, Nanako exerted herself to elevate her consciousness this time, but the previous attempt had drained much of her energy. Consequently, it was noticeably more challenging to push herself upward.
Despite this difficulty, Nanako persisted in her efforts to make this attempt.
During this process, she came to understand why it had taken Master Jingqing eight years to attain enlightenment. He had consistently strived to raise his spiritual consciousness to higher levels, a pursuit that demanded immense energy and physical strength. After just a couple of tries, she began to comprehend how long it might take to recover from this mental exhaustion.
Moreover, enlightenment is a journey requiring countless attempts. A few years of striving for enlightenment is just a brief moment in the expansive timeline of cultivation.
Nanako pushed her consciousness to its limits until she felt completely drained. At that moment, she released all effort and allowed her consciousness to descend freely.
As she fell, a whirlwind of thoughts bombarded her mind, reminiscent of her last experience. She found herself thinking about her parents, her relatives, and Charlie Wade, the person she cared about day and night.
In that moment of free fall, Nanako realized that the flood of thoughts was likely triggered by the sensation of falling, which can evoke feelings akin to dying.
This near-death sensation naturally led her to reflect upon many people and experiences in her life.
