Matilda sensed that Jacob’s words were likely just excuses, but she chose not to confront him about it. Instead, she inquired, “When would be a good time for you? Should I send you the invitation?”

Upon hearing this, Jacob quickly replied, “Oh, there’s no need for you to make a special trip to send the invitation. Just give it to Xiao Wu, the young man who assists me with teaching, and he can deliver it to me when he returns from the meeting.”

Realizing he had made up his mind, Matilda decided not to press further and said, “Alright, I’ll give him the invitation.”

Feeling a bit out of sorts and not wanting to engage in further conversation, Jacob said, “Well, Matilda, President Pei has called for a meeting. I’ll have to go now and we can talk later.”

“Okay, focus on your work,” Matilda replied.

After hanging up, Jacob tossed his phone onto the table and reclined in his office chair, propping his legs up on the desk. He felt utterly drained.

Although his concerns about Elaine had somewhat lessened his sadness regarding Matilda’s upcoming marriage, the thought still left him feeling quite unhappy when he allowed himself to reflect on it.

Deep down, he even thought that perhaps it would have been better if Matilda hadn’t returned at all.

While Jacob was lost in his thoughts, a knock at the office door interrupted him. Before he could respond, President Pei entered the room with a smile.

“Old Jacob! It’s not often I get to see you, the executive vice president! You’ve been spending all your time at the University for the Elderly, haven’t you?” President Pei remarked.

Jacob quickly removed his legs from the table and replied politely, “Hello, President Pei! I’ve been quite busy with the project at the University for the Elderly lately. However, I’ve arranged for Xiao Wu to take over there, so from now on, I’ll be attending the meetings to hear your insights.”

“No need for that!” President Pei responded quickly, still smiling. “Jacob, since you just returned today, I have something to ask of you. If you’re able to help, that would be great, but if not, it’s no problem.”

Jacob replied eagerly, “President Pei, you know how it is! You’re my mentor and big brother, and I’m your loyal soldier. Wherever you need me, I’ll go. If I can’t help, then I, Jacob, shouldn’t even be in the game! But if I can, even with my old bones, I’ll step up to showcase my skills in gratitude for everything you’ve done for me!”

President Pei beamed at the compliment and said, “Jacob, I appreciate those words. I’m genuinely proud of you. Now, regarding our brotherhood, I won’t hold back. I have a friend working in a higher-level department in the province who’s looking to climb the ladder. He wants to invite some influential people out for a meal. I arranged a gold box at Heaven Springs, but it turns out the reservation didn’t go through, and we were told last minute that we have to settle for a silver box. This really disappointed my friend. He’s invited me to join him, and since you have a good connection with Mr. Don Albert, I was hoping you could help us secure a better private room. A discount would be a bonus since my friend is a bit strapped for cash, even though he can afford it, it still stings a bit.”

Securing private rooms at Heaven Springs is always a challenge, as they often prefer to leave them empty rather than open them to the general public.
