Jacob was both shocked and terrified as he stammered, “I…I honestly don’t know! I just ran into her at the University for the Elderly, where she was a professor, so I realized she was back. But what’s going on? I have no idea!”
“You’re lying!” Elaine snapped, her teeth gritted. “Matilda has been gone for years, yet she didn’t reach out to you when she returned to Aurous Hill?”
Feeling guilty, Jacob insisted, “I swear it’s true. We really just bumped into each other at the University for the Elderly. And remember, she has a fiancé and is about to get married. We are completely innocent!”
Elaine frowned, lost in thought for a moment before suddenly exclaiming, “I know!”
She pointed an accusing finger at Jacob, her anger palpable. “We’ve been together for years, and you’ve mentioned divorce twice—once when I lost all my money playing cards, and another time when I got arrested for that pyramid scheme.”
With a cold analysis, Elaine continued, “I won’t discuss the card game; that was my fault. But regarding the MLM, I went through so much during that time. You wanted a divorce as soon as I was released, and since then, we’ve been sleeping in separate rooms! We haven’t acted like a couple in ages. Tell me the truth—did Matilda come back around the time I was arrested?”
Jacob felt a cold sweat break out across his forehead.
At that moment, he couldn’t recognize the woman standing before him. He thought, “Is this really Elaine? How does she have such sharp analytical skills?”
Yet, he dared not admit anything. He lied, saying, “Honey, it’s not what you think! During that time, Charlie and I were searching all over Aurous Hill for you. How could we have met anyone else?” He added, “If you don’t believe me, just ask Charlie when we get to the airport!” Jacob was confident Charlie would cover for him, as he was present when Jacob picked up Matilda. He knew all the details and would surely keep the truth hidden.
To his surprise, Elaine remained unfazed and replied coldly, “Why would I ask you? If I want answers, I’ll go straight to Matilda! She’s getting married, right? Well, on that wedding day, I’ll be there in person to confront her about why she tried to seduce my husband, Jacob!”
Jacob turned pale with fear!
If Elaine caused a scene at Matilda and Hank’s wedding, especially with Matilda’s son and possibly some old classmates present, their secret would be exposed in an instant! Not to mention, if Elaine made a ruckus at the wedding, she would have no dignity left in Aurous Hill. If he couldn’t stay in Aurous Hill or at home, where would he go?
Desperately nervous, Jacob pleaded, “Honey, please believe me this time! Let’s not say anything, just focus on the fact that they’re getting married. There’s nothing between me and her! You can see that I’m innocent from this alone!”
Elaine shot back angrily, “Even if Matilda has returned and is getting married, a lot can happen in that time! Just because she’s getting married now doesn’t mean nothing happened between you two while I was in jail! Maybe you two were together when I was locked up, and you asked me for a divorce, which I refused, and then she found someone else to marry!”
Jacob’s heart raced with dread: “Is Elaine channeling Sherlock Holmes? This is a serious investigation!”
Noticing his silence, Elaine grew even more convinced. Her fury boiled over as she began to unleash her wrath on Jacob, exclaiming, “Look at you! You really are guilty, aren’t you? Jacob, you heartless jerk! I was mistreated by your mother and Wendy while I was in the detention center, and now you’re out here with Matilda? I swear I’ll tear you apart! I’ll pluck out your eyeballs!”
With that, Elaine launched into a frenzied attack on Jacob. He felt a burning pain all over his face and was about to fling open the car door to escape when a siren suddenly blared behind him. A voice boomed over a loudspeaker, “What’s that Cullinan doing on the highway? Who told you to stop there? Pull over to the emergency lane immediately!”
Upon hearing the police were on their way, Jacob, whether it was a civil or traffic officer, quickly jumped out of the car. Seeing the police car speeding toward him, he ran desperately for help, shouting, “Officer, please help!”
The traffic officer halted in front of him, stepping forward to ask, “What happened?”
Jacob, tears streaming down his face, explained, “My wife wants to pluck out my eyeballs…”
“Wife?” The traffic officer raised an eyebrow, confused. “Did you two stop and fight on the highway?”
Jacob replied, sounding aggrieved, “She hit me, but I didn’t fight back…”
Just then, Elaine emerged from the car, yelling at the traffic officer, “Officer, don’t listen to this liar! He’s the one who cheated on me with his lover! He’s cuckolding me! I’ll fight him!”
The traffic officer, both amused and exasperated, said with a stern expression, “Do you really think the highway is your personal playground? If you don’t care about your life, other drivers do!”
Then, turning to Jacob, he instructed, “Hand over the car keys. My colleagues will help you drive the car to the traffic station. You two will come with me to the station for further handling!”
