Once he finished speaking, Steve had a sudden realization that something was amiss. His peripheral vision caught Charlie Wade, who was gazing back at him with a look of confusion, a hint of surprise, and a teasing smile.
Quickly clearing his throat, Steve altered his tone: “There are individuals who have the audacity to raise their voices at me, but those are people I hold in high regard. You, however, are merely a small-time lawyer. Who do you think you are to shout at me?”
Just then, Steve’s phone rang—it was the housekeeper calling.
He promptly answered, and the voice on the other end spoke respectfully: “Master, I’ve spoken with Ellis’s boss. He mentioned that Jimmy Smith will be terminated immediately and banned from practicing law in the U.S. for life.”
Steve inquired, “Is there anything else?”
The butler continued: “Ellis’s boss also sent over some documents. They contain evidence of Jimmy Smith’s alleged economic crimes. If needed, this material can be forwarded to the FBI at any time. He mentioned that Jimmy could face imprisonment until he’s seventy-five!”
“Alright!” Steve replied, clearly pleased. “Let’s proceed with this. Hand all the information over to the head of the FBI. Just communicate my instructions and ask her to oversee this matter personally. I won’t allow this guy to return to the U.S.” The butler acknowledged, “Understood, Master. I’ll take care of it immediately.”
After hanging up, Steve turned to Jimmy with a mocking expression. “From this day forward, you’ll be a wanted man by the FBI. If you step foot back in the United States, you’ll be arrested the moment you land. Expect a prison sentence of at least 20 to 30 years. My advice? Don’t return—seek employment in Nanjing instead. There’s no extradition treaty between China and the U.S., so as long as you’re not deported, you can avoid jail.”
Terrified, Jimmy burst into tears, his legs buckling as he fell to his knees. “Mr. Rothschild, please spare me. You can hit me or scold me, but don’t hand the information over to the FBI. If you do, my life is over!”
Steve simply shrugged and scoffed, “What I want is for you to be done for good! If you’re not, where’s my dignity?”
Desperate and seeing that Steve was unwavering, Jimmy turned to Matilda beside him, pleading, “Sister-in-law, please, can you help me? Just say something on my behalf.”
Matilda, still somewhat in shock, watched as the once arrogant Jimmy now begged her for help. Unsure of how to respond, she awkwardly replied, “Jimmy, I don’t know Mr. Rothschild well enough to comment on your situation…”
Matilda didn’t want to retaliate against Jimmy, but she understood that someone like Steve was not an individual they could easily approach. She figured that Hank must have come because of Charlie Wade’s influence, and he likely didn’t know either of them well.
With his lifeline severed, Jimmy could only pin his hopes on Matilda. He knelt before her, tears streaming down his face. “Sister-in-law, please, I beg you to speak to Professor He on my behalf. I promise I won’t pursue shares in the Smith Law Firm again. All I want is to safely return to the U.S. and reunite with my family. I can’t bear the thought of going to jail or being stuck in China forever!”
