“Alright!” Knight exclaimed, grinning. “My car is waiting outside; let’s get going!” As the two exited the airport, Knight welcomed Jimmy into his Bentley. They set off towards the Ellis Law Firm office located in Manhattan, with Knight at the wheel and Jimmy in the passenger seat.
During the drive, Knight expressed his regrets, saying, “Jimmy, I can’t shake off my remorse about yesterday. We’ve collaborated for many years, and I hold you in high regard. In response, Jimmy inquired, “You mentioned on the phone yesterday that you have leverage over every senior partner at the firm. What kind of leverage are we talking about?”
Knight rubbed his nose, feeling slightly embarrassed. “Well, it’s not too different from your situation. For cases that are relatively straightforward and come with high bids, I have people encourage clients to seek private arrangements with lawyers. This can cut attorney fees by at least half. Since these cases are valuable and easy to win, the clients often express a desire to settle privately. Most lawyers find it hard to turn down such offers. I also have ways to coax these clients into leaving behind relevant evidence to mitigate future risks, which I then find a way to obtain.”
As he spoke, Knight defended his actions further. “Jimmy, you know that each senior partner has a wealth of client resources in addition to their reputation. If they are poached by other firms or decide to start their own practices, they will inevitably take clients and potential clients from Ellis with them. That’s something I simply cannot permit. Knight paused for a moment and responded cautiously, “Jimmy, if this information gets out, it could severely disrupt the internal stability and unity of our law firm. However, Jimmy raised his hand to interrupt, saying seriously, “This is my only demand. If you can agree to it, we can head to the company to meet with the board members. If not, you can take me home, and I’ll go to the firm tomorrow to finalize my termination.”
