Upon hearing Charlie Wade’s remarks, Knight felt a moment of surprise.
He thought to himself, “What does he mean? Am I too happy too soon? That doesn’t sound like a good thing!”
Assuming Charlie Wade was merely Steve’s subordinate, Knight became concerned that this comment was directed by Steve, prompting him to ask, “Could you clarify what Mr. Wade means by that?”
With a smile, Charlie Wade replied, “I mean it literally, Mr. Ellis. Are you genuinely happy to see me?”
Despite his confusion, Knight maintained politeness, saying, “Mr. Wade, as an associate of Mr. Rothschild, whom I hold in high regard, I am indeed pleased to meet you.”
Charlie Wade nodded and smiled, “Let’s not jump to conclusions just yet. Why not wait half an hour and then tell me if you’re still happy to meet me?”
Knight grew even more puzzled. Unsure of Charlie Wade’s intentions, he glanced at Steve for guidance.
Noticing Knight’s look, Steve asked directly, “Ellis, correct? You had Jimmy invite me here. What’s your intention?”
Knight Ellis quickly responded, “Mr. Rothschild, for many years, Ellis Law Firm has addressed various legal issues for the peripheral companies and collateral families associated with the Rothschild family, which I greatly admire. I heard about your friendship with Jimmy and wanted to invite you to our high-level meeting, giving us a chance to showcase our expertise.”
Steve nodded and turned to Jimmy, asking, “Jimmy, if you were to evaluate your boss and your law firm objectively, what would your assessment be?”
Knight watched Jimmy with anticipation, hoping for a glowing endorsement of his firm.
After all, he had just signed a lucrative contract worth over 10 million US dollars a year, making him Jimmy’s primary financial backer. Naturally, he expected Jimmy to support him.
However, to Knight’s shock, Jimmy’s expression shifted to one of sheer disdain. He scrutinized Knight and coldly stated, “Mr. Rothschild, my boss is a scumbag. How can a company run by a scumbag be reputable?”
Knight was taken aback. He never expected Jimmy, who had always shown him respect and flattery, to suddenly turn against him, especially in front of Steve Rothschild, a significant figure. Anger surged within him, and he responded, “Jimmy, what do you mean by that? I’ve treated you well and just promoted you to director days ago, and you dare call me a scumbag?”
With a sneer, Jimmy retorted, “It’s an understatement to call you a scumbag. The term itself is too mild! Did you really think you could buy my loyalty with money?”
In an instant, Knight understood. “Oh no! Jimmy is upset about the trap I set for him and the evidence I collected against him! I thought promoting him to the board and offering an extra option would silence him, but clearly, he’s not easily appeased.”
With that thought, he forced a smile at Jimmy and said, “Listen, Jimmy, I know there are some past grievances, but I’ve been more than fair to you. What’s the point of undermining me now?”
Jimmy shot back, “I’m calling you out now because I want others to see your true colors!”
