An Understated Dominance - Chapter 313
“Luther Williams, you’ve become slower at sword fighting,” Maximus said casually.
“No! That’s not true! You must have gotten lucky!” Luther replied, feeling insulted. He turned and attacked again, despite his injuries. This time, he gave it all he had, launching fierce and relentless strikes that were difficult to evade.
During their ninth move, Luther aimed his sword at Maximus’ throat, wanting to end the fight. But instead of dodging, Maximus struck back, slashing Luther in the abdomen with surprising speed and precision.
Luther stumbled back, shocked. He realized he could have been seriously hurt if Maximus had aimed higher. “What’s happening? How did he learn to fight like this?” he thought, pressing against his bleeding stomach. It baffled him how quickly Maximus had improved after his own severe injury.
“Now it’s my turn, Luther Williams,” Maximus said, not giving his mentor a moment to regroup. He swung his sword and charged at him.
Luther quickly regained his composure and raised his sword to defend himself. Confidence drained from him, and he was forced to play defense because of his injury. Meanwhile, Maximus seemed to grow stronger, showcasing impressive sword-fighting skills that brought Luther to his knees.
“This is my chance!” At the twenty-sixth move, Luther focused all his energy, panting as he made one last desperate attempt to turn the fight in his favor. Just when he thought he might regain the upper hand, he felt a blade pressed against his neck. He realized that any small movement could cost him his life.
“Huh?”
Confused, Luther dropped the sword onto the floor. He couldn’t understand how the three flawed moves he had purposely taught Maximus led to his own defeat.
“Why? Why did this happen?” The crowd gasped as they witnessed Luther’s loss. No one expected the second-in-command to be beaten by his own student so quickly. Throughout the fight, Luther had been on the defensive.
“Impossible!” he stammered.
“How could Maximus Kane beat Dad? I thought Dad taught him everything!” Brody, Oliver, and the other disciples were sweating nervously. They had been sure Luther would win, but Maximus’s skill had shocked them all. He had forced Luther into a defensive stance and ended the battle with a powerful sword move.
“It’s our last-minute training that did it,” Dustin said with a grin. Brody and his friends looked terrified. Did Maximus really win using the few moves Dustin had taught him? That thought was chilling.
“W-who taught you those moves?” Luther asked, sweating as he pressed his hand against his bleeding abdomen.
“That’s not important. What matters is that I will do to you what you did to me in the past,” Maximus replied as he lifted his sword again.
“Wait!” Luther cried in panic. “Max, I’m sorry for what happened before. It was a mistake. Please give me another chance.”
“A chance? Did you give me a chance when you destroyed my core?” Maximus said grimly.
“Max, I know I was wrong! Please, have mercy on me—we have shared years together!” Luther fell to his knees. “I have many enemies. If you take away my core and my skills, I won’t survive a day. Please spare me!”
Maximus stood silent, torn. Despite his desire for revenge, a part of him hesitated.
Maximus thought back to his training. He had learned all he knew about sword fighting from Luther, even if Luther’s reasons weren’t exactly pure. Despite the harsh methods Luther used, Maximus recognized that he owed his skills to him. So, even though Luther could be cruel, Maximus chose to rise above it and be the better person.
