Although he was still young and didn’t fully grasp the concept of love, Sonny knew that his mother would soon marry Uncle Duncan. He didn’t really understand what marriage entailed; he only knew that it meant living together.
In the future, Uncle Duncan would either move in with them or they would relocate to his house.
Sonny thought that marriage often led to having children. For instance, his aunt Serenity and uncle Zachary were married, and now his aunt was expecting a little brother.
This made Sonny wonder if his mother would have a little sister for him.
“It’s hard to say. Maybe there will be, maybe not,” Serenity replied cautiously.
She didn’t want to assume that her sister, Liberty, would definitely have a second child after remarrying; that decision ultimately rested with Liberty.
The Lewis family certainly hoped Liberty would have another child, regardless of whether it was a boy or a girl. If she did, Duncan would have an heir.
Sonny declared, “I want a younger sister! When Mom and Uncle Lewis get married, I will ask her for a little sister.”
Serenity smiled and asked, “Do you understand what marriage is?”
Sonny answered, “It’s when a man and a woman come together; that’s marriage. Auntie, I want to get married when I grow up.”
“You’re just a kid, thinking about such grown-up matters,” Serenity chuckled.
She ruffled Sonny’s hair, realizing she needed to be more cautious about what she said around him so he wouldn’t overhear sensitive topics.
Yet, Sonny was quite perceptive and observant.
Indeed, kids these days are exceptionally sharp.
Serenity asked, “Sonny, do you want your mom to be with Uncle Duncan?”
“Of course! Aren’t they together? Whenever Uncle Duncan sees my mom, he only has eyes for her. He always claims to love me the most, but I know he’s lying. He thinks I’m just a three-year-old who’s easy to trick.”
“I’ve noticed that too. Uncle Duncan is just like Uncle Zack; he’s afraid of you, and he’s also afraid of my mom. If I misbehave and my mom threatens to hit me with a clothes hanger, Uncle Duncan won’t defend me. Instead, he’ll help my mom find the hanger and remind her not to hit me too hard or she’ll get tired.”
Sonny pouted as he spoke, feeling that Uncle Duncan didn’t truly love him.
He thought Uncle Duncan’s affection was insincere.
Whenever he disagreed with his mother, Uncle Duncan would always side with her.
Serenity covered her mouth and chuckled.
Sonny looked up and shot a glare at Serenity.
“Auntie, you’re laughing at someone else’s misfortune. You’re laughing at me,” he said.
Serenity tried to suppress her laughter. “Auntie isn’t laughing at you; I promise,” she said.
She bent down, attempting to lift Sonny.
Sonny didn’t want her to carry him.
“Auntie, Uncle said I’m too grown up to be held in your arms because he’s afraid I might kick you in the stomach.”
Sonny gently touched Serenity’s belly, being very cautious.
He would never kick her. Even if she weren’t pregnant, he just wouldn’t do it.
Serenity was like a second mother to him and always took excellent care of him. His mom said that when he was born, it was his aunt who cared for him day and night.
The person he loved the most was his mother, followed closely by his aunt, Serenity.
Sonny wished he could grow up quickly so that he…
He was capable of protecting his mother and aunt.
“It’s fine; you’re not too heavy. I’m really strong, and I can carry you for an hour,” Serenity said as she hoisted Sonny into her arms.
“Ring, ring, ring.”
Just as Serenity lifted Sonny, her cell phone began to ring.
