Chapter 3449
“Duncan, I understand you’re anxious,” Zachary said, a hint of amusement in his voice at his friend’s complaints.
It seemed as though Zachary didn’t care about Liberty at all. However, as long as he loved Serenity, he would naturally be concerned for Liberty’s safety. Liberty was Serenity’s only sister and had raised her.
Zachary held a deep respect for Liberty. To him, she was both a sister-in-law and a mother-in-law.
Whenever the young couple had a minor disagreement, Zachary often turned to Liberty to vent. If Serenity ignored him, he felt wronged and sought solace by discussing it with Liberty.
Serenity once remarked that she had never encountered a man who would complain to his wife’s family about issues in their marriage. Zachary was that rare breed.
“How could I not care about my sister? She’s my wife’s biological sister, which makes her like a mother-in-law to me,” he explained.
An elder sister often takes on a maternal role.
At fifteen, Liberty had been responsible for her ten-year-old sister, balancing the roles of both sister and parent. She not only excelled in her own life but also raised her younger sister to be exceptional.
Zachary continued, “I tried to persuade my sister to return, but she insisted that even with Grandpa Jimenez as a witness, it might not be possible to hold the head of the Farrell family accountable for her life. The incident occurred forty or fifty years ago, and the statute of limitations has long expired.
My sister refuses to accept this. She believes Clarissa should pay with her life, and now Clarissa is determined to fight us to the death. We can only make her pay if we catch her with evidence.
Don’t worry; I’ve already deployed more people to protect my sister. Clive flew to Jensburg this evening and has reunited with her. Kevin is there too, along with the Queen family. My sister will be safe.”
Zachary reassured Duncan, “My sister specifically asked me not to tell you, fearing it would only cause you more worry.”
and felt anxious. However, I couldn’t conceal it. “Don’t worry, Duncan. If you do, my sister will sense it and have to calm you down.”
Duncan replied glumly, “How could I possibly call Liberty? I’m afraid I wouldn’t be able to control my emotions and it might affect your sister’s mood. I feel so depressed; it’s all my fault for being useless!”
Duncan had always seen himself as a man of integrity. Yet, when the woman he loved was in danger, he found himself unable to be by her side or help her. No matter how many people he arranged to assist, he could never feel at ease.
“I’m terrified. I fear she might get hurt again like last time. I still get scared when I think about how she was ambushed when she first arrived in Jensburg. I’m so afraid. I wish Liberty were just an ordinary woman. She doesn’t need a notable family background; as long as she’s simple, I don’t need her to be powerful. As long as she does what she enjoys, that’s enough for me.
I can provide her with the best life and support her forever. I don’t care about her family background. Even if she were the daughter of a beggar, I know who she is, and I would never look down on her.”
Duncan struck his legs again in frustration.
Zachary had no option but to intervene, shouting firmly, “Duncan, please stop this. It won’t be easy for any of us if you continue like this. If my sister knew you were blaming yourself, it would only make her feel worse.”
Duncan remained silent.
Zachary continued, “Have faith in my sister, have faith in all of us, and believe that good will triumph over evil. Clarissa has harmed her elder sister and younger sister; there will always be retribution. I refuse to believe that God continues to favor her.”
To help calm Duncan’s emotions, Zachary even mentioned God.
