With school on winter break, Jasmine returned to the bookstore because staying at home felt too dull. Although business was slow, the store remained open, and she enjoyed chatting with the neighbors. Some had closed their shops for the New Year, while others, who had family in Wiltspoon, didn’t feel the need to leave town.
Jasmine, now more than a month further along in her pregnancy than Serenity, was in good health and felt that her pregnancy hadn’t slowed her down significantly. Her husband, Josh, was incredibly attentive, allowing her to go out whenever she wanted, provided that bodyguards accompanied her. Even Josh’s cousin, who served as her pregnancy nutritionist, had stopped voicing objections.
After reading a novel for a while, Jasmine set the book down, stood up, and walked around the shop to tidy the shelves. She knew that sitting for too long would make her drowsy, and the baby would start kicking if she remained still. Moving around seemed to calm the baby, resulting in gentler kicks. Standing behind the counter, Jasmine waited for Carrie to enter the shop.

“Mrs. Labbe, are you here to purchase study materials for your brother-in-law?” Jasmine inquired with a polite smile.

Carrie returned the smile. “Yes, he asked me to pick up some study guides and test questions. He’s already finished his schoolwork and wants to practice more during the break.”

After mentioning the specific materials, Jasmine retrieved the books for her. Once she had collected them, Carrie casually asked, “By the way, I haven’t seen Mrs. York around lately. Where has she been?”

“Are you looking for Serenity? Do you need something from her?” Jasmine raised an eyebrow, intrigued.

Carrie was already aware that Serenity had taken Sonny to the Johnson home in Annenburg; Mr. Labbe had informed her. He had also complained that Carrie hadn’t managed to become close friends with Serenity. If she had, Serenity could have introduced her to the eldest mistress of the Johnson family and potentially invited her to FC Manor, where she could meet the child Mr. Labbe had been eager to connect with.
