When Charlie Wade looked at the two beautiful dolls, he felt a strange sense of déjà vu, but he couldn’t quite place where he had seen them before. Beside him, Gu Qiuyi smiled and asked, “Brother Charlie Wade, do these two kids look familiar to you?”
Charlie nodded enthusiastically. “Yes, they look very familiar, but I just can’t remember where I’ve seen them.”
Lin Wanqiu, who was standing nearby, chimed in with a grin. “Silly boy, that’s you and the girl! This is from when you both were younger—it’s your sixth birthday!”
Charlie was surprised. “Really? That’s why it looks so familiar, but I don’t have a clear memory of that time.”
Lin Wanqiu nodded and pulled out a photo album from her bag. She flipped through it until she found an old, yellowed photo and handed it to Charlie.
As he looked at the photo, he realized that it showed him and Gu Qiuyi, dressed the same way and with the same expressions as the dolls on the cake.
Lin Wanqiu laughed and said, “After you sang ‘Happy Birthday’ that day, you insisted that you wanted to marry her. At first, you said no, but your parents told you to wait until you grew up and that you would have to marry her someday. You looked so upset then, saying you didn’t want to marry someone who always followed you around. When it was time to take pictures, you didn’t seem happy at all!”
Charlie stared at the photo for a long time, trying to remember the details from that day. Many memories from his childhood were just vague outlines now, and the clearer images had faded away.
Charlie Wade had lost all the ways to remember what his parents looked like since they passed away. Over the years, he didn’t have any photos of himself as a child, nor any pictures with his parents or of them when they were young. Because of this, his memories of them had faded.
When he first saw the fondant doll, he didn’t even realize it represented him and Gu Qiuyi. But now, looking at an old photo of them as kids, Charlie felt a rush of emotions.
Gu Qiuyi, noticing his reaction, smiled and asked, “Brother Charlie Wade, do you still like this cake?”
“I love it, I really do!” Charlie replied, genuinely touched. “I never expected the cake to be so realistic!”
Gu Qiuyi beamed at him. “This cake is made by the best fondant cake maker in Yanjing. So many people want her cakes, including many famous rich folks. My parents booked this birthday cake months ago and brought it all the way from Yanjing just to surprise you.”
Charlie gazed at the dolls on the cake, seeing the innocent faces of himself and Gu Qiuyi. His heart was full, and he felt a bit teary. To cover his emotions, he quickly smiled and joked, “Oh, this doll is so beautifully made, I don’t want to eat it anymore.”
Gu Qiuyi laughed and said, “Brother Charlie Wade, that doll isn’t for eating. It’s a keepsake for you. You can eat everything else, just not the fondant doll.”
