Elaine responded without a moment’s hesitation, patting her chest confidently. “Don’t worry, my dear son-in-law! I won’t quarrel with him at all! If you gave Mom a million, she would hardly be home except to sleep. If he tries to pick a fight, I won’t give him the chance!” Jacob overheard this.

Charlie chuckled, “No, Mom, I prefer to do things myself rather than chat too much. Besides, you might not know where some things are, so I’ll handle it.”

With that said, he turned to head upstairs.

Jacob, who had been holding back his feelings, couldn’t contain himself any longer as Charlie was about to leave. He blurted out, “Oh, my dear son-in-law, wait a moment…”

Charlie turned around to ask, “Dad, what’s on your mind?”

Jacob quickly glanced at Elaine beside him, then back at Charlie, looking as if he had just tasted something extraordinary yet couldn’t quite savor it, coveting what seemed out of reach.
