Charlie replied, “Well, since you don’t really want to go, just tell her the timing isn’t good for you and wish them a happy wedding.”

Jacob hesitated, saying, “I don’t want to attend, but if I refuse outright, it might come off as rude. What if Aunt Matilda thinks I’m avoiding it because I’m afraid of Elaine?”

Charlie shot back, “Isn’t that actually how you feel?”

Jacob responded earnestly, “That’s true, but I can’t let others read me so easily. I need to maintain some dignity!”

Continuing, Jacob added, “Did you notice Matilda’s wording? She invited our entire family. She probably thinks I’m scared of Elaine!”

Charlie sighed in exasperation, “Dad, please take my advice: don’t worry about your pride right now. If you want to borrow money from the slope, this is the perfect chance. You should seize this opportunity to resolve things once and for all.”

Jacob waved dismissively and replied, “I’m no fool. Why would I take the easy way down when someone else offers it?”

Typing quickly, Jacob declared, “I’ll agree to attend at first, and when she sends the invitation, I’ll say I have something else going on the day before the wedding.”

Jacob shrugged, “What’s there to worry about? Aunt Matilda won’t reach out to her, not even if her life depended on it. Even if the invitation is meant for our whole family, it will definitely come to me. As long as I keep quiet, who will know?”

Charlie shook his head, saying, “Dad, I really think you should be more careful.”
