Matilda had assumed that by mentioning an invitation for Jacob’s family, he would understand her plan: to make an excuse and say she didn’t have time on the wedding day. She figured this would be the simplest way to navigate the situation.
However, she was taken aback when Jacob responded with a straightforward message: “No problem, our family of four will be there on time!”
This left Matilda feeling puzzled. She wondered to herself, “What does Jacob mean? Is he really planning to bring Elaine to the wedding?”
As this thought crossed her mind, Matilda couldn’t help but frown. She really didn’t want to see Elaine, especially not on such an important day.
Hank, who was busy writing out the invitations, noticed Matilda’s serious demeanor and asked, “Matilda, what’s bothering you?”
Matilda replied honestly, “Jacob texted back. He said he’s bringing his whole family to our wedding.”
“Really?” Hank, not being privy to Jacob’s peculiar way of thinking, found it hard to understand. “Given how afraid he is of his wife, why would he even consider bringing her to our wedding?”
“I have no idea…” Matilda sighed, feeling bewildered by Jacob’s actions. “I just can’t figure out what he’s thinking.”
Hank pondered for a moment and then smiled. “Honestly, I think Jacob still has some feelings for you. With you about to marry me, he might be feeling a bit angry. Perhaps bringing the whole family along is his way of showing that.”
Matilda shook her head. “I can’t really say if that’s true.”
Hank continued, “It makes sense that Jacob would do this. We’re all going to settle in Aurous Hill, and he can’t keep this from Elaine forever. Maybe he sees this as an opportunity to finally address the issue. Sometimes, facing the truth is better than dragging it out.”
Matilda bit her lip, feeling conflicted. “From what I know of him, Jacob has always had this ‘ostrich’ mentality. When faced with danger, he tends to bury his head in the sand. Even if he knows there’s a threat, he’d rather ignore it. I find it hard to believe he’d confront the situation head-on.”
She added, “Based on his past behavior, he would never voluntarily tell Elaine about our plans. If he hasn’t mentioned it to her, it’s likely he’s trying to keep it a secret.”
Hank frowned, realizing the validity of her point. “If that’s the case, then his decision to bring the family is indeed quite strange.”
He then asked, “Should I call Charlie and ask him to find out?”
“No, that’s not necessary,” Matilda replied, waving her hand. “Charlie is Jacob’s son-in-law, so it wouldn’t be appropriate for us to discuss Jacob behind his back. Let’s just see how it unfolds. We’ll have plenty of guests on the wedding day, so I’m not too worried about Elaine causing a scene. Besides, you invited Charlie to be our witness, so I believe Elaine will behave.”
Matilda continued, “If we can resolve the potential issue with Elaine at the wedding, it could actually be beneficial. Just make sure to remind Charlie to stay alert after the wedding.”
“Absolutely,” Hank agreed with a nod. “I’ll go ahead and write an invitation for Jacob and his family.”
Matilda nodded in approval. “Yes, that sounds good.”
Hank then asked, “By the way, how should I give him the invitation once it’s ready?”
Matilda responded, “I’ll take it to him. He has a modern calligraphy and painting class at the University for the Elderly tomorrow, and I’ll hand it to him there.”
