“That’s nonsense!” Elaine retorted, blurting out her frustration without thinking.
As soon as she spoke, she felt a pang of anxiety. In the past, she often expressed her feelings freely to Charlie Wade, but things had changed. Now, she relied on him for everything—food, shelter, and transportation. The thought of upsetting him made her uneasy.
So, she quickly clarified, “Charlie Wade, I’m not angry with you. I’m furious at that jerk Jacob! He claims he cares about me, but how can that be true?!”
Charlie Wade tried to reason with her: “Mom, you don’t understand. Aunt Matilda has been in the United States for thirty years and has done exceptionally well.
