Jacob, who was nearby, swiftly grabbed his phone to check the current rate. After a moment, he announced, “Today’s exchange rate is 7.2 yuan.”

Claire added hastily, “I didn’t expect Miss Fei to offer so much. She asked me to get a card from JP Morgan in the U.S. and said it was normal wages and bonuses. Elaine quickly responded, “Sweetheart, don’t be silly! They gave you that money; keep it! Why would you think about returning it? That’s like slapping someone in the face!”
Claire frowned at her mother’s analogy, “Mom… that’s a bit extreme… it’s not the same thing.”
“Of course it is!” Elaine insisted, her tone firm. “Rich people value face. If you refuse their money, it’s like you’re disrespecting them. You can’t do that!”
She then softened her tone, adding, “Just keep that money, my dear, and don’t be foolish about it, alright?”
Claire responded earnestly, “Mom, I really didn’t do much for them in the U.S., and the project isn’t going well. There are still disputes. How can I justify taking so much money? It feels wrong.”
Elaine rolled her eyes, saying, “This is the first time I’ve heard someone say money feels wrong! If it were me, I’d happily take even two million U.S. dollars, or even two hot gold bars! I wouldn’t think twice!”
Then, with a sly grin, she added, “If you think it’s too much to handle, just give it to Mom! I’ll save it for you. When you and Charlie Wade have kids, I’ll save it for their college fund!”
Charlie Wade chuckled at this. “Save it for the college fund? Only Elaine would think like that! If she actually got her hands on two million dollars, she’d probably spend it all before the baby even arrives!”
Claire knew her mother’s financial decisions were questionable, so she said, “Mom, I want to think this over. Right now, my plan is if the project picks up, I’ll keep the money. I won’t return it to Miss Fei as long as she needs my help. But if the project doesn’t move forward, I’ll at least give her back half.”
Elaine quickly interjected, “At most, just half? How about you transfer one million U.S. dollars to me first, and I’ll put it in a fixed deposit?”
Claire replied, “If I keep one million U.S. dollars, I want to invest it in my company. Now is the perfect time to build my career. Putting that money in the bank isn’t as meaningful as using it to grow my business.”
Elaine frowned, “So you really don’t trust me?”
Claire sighed, “It’s not that I don’t trust you, Mom. I just have my own plans for this money. During my trip to the U.S., I realized many design firms are competing fiercely for awards and visibility. I want to take on significant projects and expand my company. I plan to hire some top designers and grow our operations. This money will serve as the initial start-up capital.”
She then looked at Elaine and said, “If you need some cash, I can give you fifty thousand U.S. dollars as pocket money. You don’t have to save it for me; you can spend it however you want!”
Elaine’s eyes lit up at the mention of fifty thousand dollars. “Alright! That sounds great! My daughter is incredible and has such ambition. If you really establish a well-known design brand, our family will be even more successful!”
